Randolph Finishes Tied For Third At Carpet Capital

9/13/2009 | Men's Golf

DALTON, Ga. - Ole Miss junior golfer Jonathan Randolph posted a three-day total of 5-under 211 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, to lead the Rebels and finish tied for third Sunday.

Randolph shot an even par 72 in the final round to go with a 68-71 the first two days. He tied for third with Chattanooga's Stephan Jaeger, both one back of co-medalists Nils Floren (Texas Tech) and Darren Renwick (Tennessee).

This marks Randolph's fourth top five and seventh top 10 finish of his career. The Brandon native led the field after his 68 on Friday, and was two back after Saturday's second round. At one point on Sunday, Randolph held the lead at 7-under, but wo bogeys on his final nine, (holes 1-9) left him tied for third.

Floren, who came in to the final round in seventh, shot a 4-under 68 to get to the top. Renwick was in sixth at the start of the day, and turned in a 69 to move up.

"Jonathan had a great tournament. He came ever-so-close to winning his first college tournament. It's too bad he came up one shot short," head coach Ernest Ross said.

Unfortunately, Randolph didn't have any help this weekend, as the young Rebels finished 12th with a three-day total of 304-295-300-899. Freshman Tom Brown of England was the next highest finisher for the Rebels, tying for 40th with a 79-71-74-224.

"We are very disappointed in the play of our other players," Ross added. This was not a good tournament for our young team."

Tennessee left the other 11 teams in its wake Sunday, blistering the Farm in 14-under-par 274 to win by 12 shots over Chattanooga. The Volunteers finished at 13-under-par 851, and the Moccasins 1-under-par 863. Tech was another two shots back at 3-over-par 867, followed by Auburn (870) and South Carolina (872).

The Rebels will be back in action Sept. 25-27 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn.
