Pomeranz Named Top 25 College Prospect By Baseball America
9/16/2009 | Baseball
Pomeranz is one of several pitchers - but few left-handers - predicted to be one of the top picks in a draft that Baseball America feels could be see a heavy emphasis placed on pitchers in 2010. He is also one of seven players from the Southeastern Conference ranked among the top 25 college prospects and third southpaw. He was rated the third best left-handed prospect in the college ranks.
Pomeranz is coming off an 8-4 season a year ago that saw him get stronger as the season progressed. The 6-4 lefty posted a team-best 3.40 ERA among regular starters as he anchored the weekend rotation for the Rebels and struck out a team-high 124 batters.
Throughout the course of the season, Pomeranz posted wins over #2 LSU, Kentucky, #20 Florida, Auburn and #16 Arkansas. He pitched a complete-game against the Gators on the road and continued to gain strength down the stretch before turning in dominant performances in the NCAA Tournament.
Pomeranz worked 8.0 innings against Monmouth in the first game of the NCAA Regional to lead the Rebels to the win as he allowed one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts. He then returned to the mound on two days rest to pitch against Western Kentucky in the Championship game and turned in his second complete-game of the season with a career-high 16 strikeouts while allowing only one unearned run on two hits.
Following the 2009 season, the Rebels saw a school record 10 players drafted including fourth-round pick Scott Bittle and fifth-round selection Nathan Baker. It marks the second straight season the Rebels have had at least four pitchers selected in the MLB Draft and brings the total to 14 players selected in the first five rounds of the draft over the last six seasons - eight of those were selected in the second round or higher.
Pomeranz and the Rebels return to the field for fall practice in preparation for the upcoming baseball season the weekend of September 24, when Ole Miss will begin fall practice.
