BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss sophomore forward Nikki Byrd was selected as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after leading the Rebels to a pair of wins the league office announced Monday.

Byrd averaged a double-double with 12.5 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game during the week to help Ole Miss leapfrog into a tie for first place in the conference standings with a 5-1 league record.

The Brookhaven, Miss., native opened the week by scoring 12 points and pulling down a game-high nine rebounds in Ole Miss' 66-58 win over in-state rival Mississippi State Thursday night. She also tallied three steals, one blocked shot and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and currently leads the league with .632 field goal percentage.

On Sunday against No. 8 Georgia, Byrd earned her first start of the season and responded by scoring 13 points and tying her career-high with 14 rebounds to lead Ole Miss to a 66-65 upset victory over the Lady Bulldogs. The win gave Ole Miss its first ever win in Athens and handed Georgia its first home loss of the season. In addition, it was the first time the Rebels had beaten a ranked team on the road since 2002.

The Rebels have now won eight of their last nine games and five straight in conference. Ole Miss' five-game conference winning streak is its longest since the 2006-07 season.

Byrd's selection marks the second straight week that Ole Miss has featured the SEC Player of the Week. All-SEC guard Bianca Thomas earned the award last week after scoring a Tad Smith Coliseum record 42 points against LSU Jan. 17.

Ole Miss returns to action Thursday at 6 p.m. when the Rebels travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina from Colonial Life Arena.
