OXFORD, Miss. - Like many of her freshman teammates, freshman Shae Nelson said she chose Ole Miss because of the family-like atmosphere she encountered while on her official visit.
"I wanted to go somewhere where the atmosphere is what I'm used to," she said. "I'm very close to my family and the team made me feel like we are a family."
Nelson, a 5-10 guard from Cordova, Tenn., averaged 16.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game as a senior at Cordova High School and averaged 17.5 points per game as a junior. She said her shooting is a strength she brings to the team and has been called the best pure shooter on the team by head coach Renee Ladner.
"She is the best pure shooter on the team," Ladner said. "She has an SEC body and has the ability to play quality minutes at the three. As she continues to grow and mature, she will give us quality minutes."
Prior to coming to Ole Miss, Nelson said her favorite basketball moment was a game against Arlington High School where she scored 27 points, all on three pointers, all in the first quarter. Since coming to Ole Miss, Nelson said one of the funniest moments she's experienced with her team is when fellow freshman Jasmine Trotter fell off the treadmill in the weight room.
"She's the tallest girl on the team and to see her fall into such a small space was pretty funny," Nelson said.
Fan's first chance to see Nelson and the rest of the 2010-11 women's basketball team will be on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. when the team hosts the University of West Georgia in an exhibition game.
