Rebels Hold On To Win Mobile Bay

2/23/2010 | Men's Golf

MOBILE, Ala. - It came down to the last hole, and took some heroics, but the Ole Miss men's golf team held on to win the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course for their first tournament title of the year.

Conditions became tougher as the day wore on, and the Rebels (877) held on after what seemed like a comfortable lead with five holes to play. Instead, they went into the final hole with just a one stroke lead.

On the final hole, sophomore Joe David hit his tee shot in the right rough. Unfortunately, his ball landed right next to a pinecone. All he could do was punch it out, which left him 115 yards to the hole. The Madison, Tenn., native then knocked his approach shot to a foot and tapped in for par to seal the victory for the Rebels.

"It came down to the last hole in a very tight tournament," head coach Ernest Ross said. "The later tee times really got some tougher winds. We thought we had a comfortable lead with five holes to go, but made some bad scores.

"Joe saved the day by getting up and down for par on 18 from 115 yards. It might not have been the most beautiful win, but we did win. I think we learned some valuable lessons."

Ole Miss' playing partners, Vanderbilt and Memphis, both faded, and as it turned out, Illinois State posted the low round of the day (292) to finish second at 878.

Junior Jonathan Randolph tied for third with a 71-72-72-215 to earn his fourth top-five finish of the year and seventh of his career. The Brandon, Miss., native finished just two back of medalist Kent Bulle (Middle Tennessee State), who's first round 67 paced him.

Despite a final round 75, David shot 72-69 in the opening two rounds to finish tied for 6th at 216. He earned his first top 10 finish of the year and the fourth of his career.

The Rebels will be back in action March 15-16 at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate.
