3/7/2010 | Softball
WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Tennessee Tech scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and propel the Golden Eagles to a 4-3 victory over Ole Miss (12-7) on the second day of the Buzz Classic on Saturday. The Rebels also dropped the second game of the day 7-6 to Tennessee-Martin.
Golden Eagle right fielder Brooke Basten knocked a bases-loaded single to center that scored one run to start the top of the seventh. Second baseman Melody Christian added an RBI fielder's choice later in the frame and left fielder Chanelle Spalding looped run-scoring single to left to cap the inning.
The Rebels loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh and right fielder Alyssa McGovern reached on a dropped throw at first by second baseman Melody Christian that allowed two runs to score. However, Tennessee Tech starting pitcher Maddie Schmissrauter got Aly Presswood to ground out to first to end the game.
First baseman Whitney Cummings put Tennessee Tech on the scoreboard in the top of the first with a two-out solo home run to left that gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
With one down in the Ole Miss fifth, left fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo reached on a hit by pitch and moved to second on second baseman Corrine Doornberg's infield single. Both runners moved into scoring position on an Ashley Dowdy sac bunt and shortstop Lauren Grill delivered an infield single to score Ghinaudo and tie the game at one.

Game Two
Despite rallying down four runs in the seventh, the Ole Miss Rebels could not hold off Tennessee-Martin on Saturday as catcher Laurie Lindow knocked a single up the middle to score Jordan Garrett in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Skyhawks to a 7-6 win over the Rebels on the second day of the Buzz Classic.
Trailing 5-1 with one out in the top of the seven, the Rebels mounted a furious come back. Lauren Grill and Kelly Nolan both reached on back-to-back errors to give the Rebels runners on first and second. After pitcher Brittany Barnhill popped out to short, Alyssa McGovern slapped a single to left to load the bases. Catcher Amber Tramp then laced a double off the center field wall to score two and cut the lead to 5-3. Third baseman Cali Overbeck followed with a single up the middle that knocked two more and tied the game at five.
Ole Miss took a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth. Alise Doubt started the inning on second in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule and moved to third on a Corrine Doornberg sac bunt. Ashley Dowdy then smashed a single to center to score Doubt and give the Rebels the lead.
Tennessee-Martin tied the game back up in the bottom frame after pulling off a steal of home with runners on the corners.
The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Kelly Nolan reached on a fielding error by UT-Martin second baseman Jordan Garrett. The booted ball allowed Doornberg, who had doubled to start the game, to score from third.
The Skyhawks answered back in bottom of the first when a Brittany Barnhill wild pitch allowed a run to score from third and left fielder Lauren R.berts hit a solo home run to right center that gave Tennessee-Martin a 2-1 advantage.
Tennessee-Martin added to the lead in the fifth with back-to-back solo home runs from right fielder Meg Latimore and center fielder Megan Williams that brought the Skyhawk lead to 4-1. Jordan Garrett extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth with a solo home run to center.
Lindsey Perry took the loss after pitching the final 2.1 innings in relief. Perry allowed two runs, both unearned, while striking out one. Barnhill started the game for the Rebels and gave up five runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work.
