Rebels Drop Series At South Carolina With Saturday Loss

4/17/2010 | Baseball

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Matt Snyder was solid in the lineup for the Rebels, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch, but the Rebels couldn't come up with enough offense to overcome a big Gamecock inning as No. 14 Ole Miss (23-13, 7-7 SEC) fell to No. 5 South Carolina (28-7, 11-3 SEC) by a score of 9-5 on Saturday.

With the loss, the Rebels dropped the weekend series. Ole Miss will look to salvage the weekend and avoid the first sweep of the season in game three at 12:30 p.m. CDT on Sunday.

Aaron Barrett (6-2) suffered the loss as he gave up eight runs on 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.

Sam Dyson (3-2) grabbed the win for the Gamecocks as he held the Rebels to four hits and allowed five unearned runs in 6.0 innings of work. Dyson walked three and struck out six.

"South Carolina was able to put the big inning together and was just locked in on Aaron Barrett early," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "We didn't make any errors in the field, but we have to make the plays to get us out of innings."

Ole Miss got on the board in the first when Tanner Mathis scored from second a fielding error in left field off a fly ball to the wall from Matt Smith. But instead of leaving two men on with no outs, Smith was called out on the play as he passed Tim Ferguson on the base path as Ferguson retreated to tag up on the play. A double play then ended the Rebel half of the first with Ole Miss holding to a 1-0 lead.

South Carolina rallied in the second with a single and a double to open the inning that put two men in scoring position before a single up the middle from Adrian Morales pushed both runs across and gave the Gamecocks the 2-1 lead. A single to right and a bunt single on the infield loaded the bases before another single to right drove in another run to put USC up 3-1.

A grand slam with two outs then put the Gamecocks up 7-1 before a groundout got the Rebels out of the inning trailing by six runs.

Ole Miss got two runs back in the third with a pair of sac flies from Smith and Miller that cut the lead to four at 7-3.The rally started with a fielding error to put Mathis on before a double to left from Ferguson put both men in scoring position for the fly outs.

South Carolina responded with a solo home run to open the bottom half of the inning as the lead moved back out to five.

The Rebels scored on a passed ball in the fifth to cut the lead in half again with Ferguson coming home on the play. Ferguson walked before stealing second. A wild pitch moved him to third before the passed ball brought him across the plate. The run pulled Ole Miss within four at 8-4.

The Gamecocks put together another rally to answer the Rebels' with a single run in the bottom of the fifth that put the home team up 9-4.

Ole Miss scored its final run in the seventh when Taylor Hightower scored from second on a single to left from Smith. Hightower reached on a fielding error at third and took second on a groundout from Mathis to get into scoring position for the Smith single.

The Rebels would get no closer, however, as South Carolina held them off the board the rest of the way.
