Snyder Grand Slam Helps Rebels Down No. 5 LSU

4/25/2010 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. - Matt Snyder hit a grand slam as one of his two home runs as part of a four home run effort for the game from the Rebels as No. 19 Ole Miss (26-13, 9-7 SEC) downed No. 5 LSU 11-9 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Snyder finished the first game 4-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored to help the Rebels claim the slugfest. Miles Hamblin and Tim Ferguson also homered on the afternoon. Ferguson also went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI.

Rory McKean (3-1) picked up the win in relief as he entered the game in the fourth and worked 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Brett Huber picked up his fifth save as he retired the side in order in the fifth with a groundout and two strikeouts.

LSU struck first, scoring on a two-run home run in the top of the first when Blake Dean sent the ball over the wall in left field, scoring Austin Nola from second. Nola walked and took second on a wild pitch before scoring on the Dean hit that put LSU up 2-0.

Miles Hamblin responded with a two-run shot of his own in the bottom half of the inning that scored Tim Ferguson from second and tied the score at two. Matt Snyder then put the Rebels on top 3-2 with a solo shot to left.

A grand slam from Matt Snyder, his second home run in as many innings, highlighted a six-run inning for the Rebels and put Ole Miss on top 8-2 after the second inning. Taylor Hightower scored earlier in the inning on a single to center from Tim Ferguson. Hightower reached on a double before taking third on a passed ball during Ferguson's at bat.

The Tigers responded in the top of the third, putting three men on with walks and one out on the board before Tyler Hanover hit into a fielder's choice at short that saw an out recorded at second, but scored Dean who walked to open the inning. A fielding error at second allowed a second run to cross the plate and cut the lead to 9-4.

LSU rallied again in the fourth, using two walks to get things started before Ole Miss went to the bullpen for Rory McKean. McKean got a fly out that allowed Mikie Mahtook to take third before a sac fly from Micah Gibbs scored him and cut the lead to four at 9-5.

The sixth inning saw another Tiger rally sparked by back-to-back hits from Nola and Dean before Matt Gaudet came up with a three-run home run with two outs to cut the lead to 9-8.

Tim Ferguson hit a solo home run to open up the home half of the sixth and put the Rebels back out in front by two.

Following a single to open the seventh inning, the Rebels again turned to the bullpen for Matt Tracy. With two outs on the board and two in scoring position, Tracy struck out Nola looking to end the inning and keep the Rebels on top by two runs.

A solo home run from Gaudet with two men down in the eighth pulled LSU back to within one run at 10-9.

Ole Miss pushed back out to a two run lead in the bottom half of the inning when Snyder came up with a single to center that drove in Hightower from second. Hightower reached on a walk and then took second on a single from Matt Smith before scoring on the Snyder hit.

Huber entered the game in the ninth, retiring the side in order with a groundout and two strikeouts to save the game for Ole Miss.
