Rebels Fall To Alabama 4-1 On Saturday

5/15/2010 | Baseball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Aaron Barrett held the Crimson Tide hitless for six innings, but the bats came alive late for the home team as No. 14 Ole Miss (36-16, 16-10 SEC) fell to Alabama (30-21, 11-15 SEC) by a score of 4-1 on Saturday.

The loss evened the weekend series at a game each after Ole Miss claimed the first game of the series Friday night with a 5-4 victory.

Reliever Matt Tracy (3-3) suffered the loss for Ole Miss as he allowed three runs - two earned - on two hits with a pair of walks in an inning of work. Barrett worked 6.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits with eight walks and seven strikeouts.

Jimmy Nelson (6-2) picked up the win for Alabama as he worked a complete game and held the Rebels to one run on four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

"It was a great pitching game by both starters," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "That was a tremendous effort by [Aaron] Barrett. He really hung in there. Alabama's pitcher was just too good today. He had good command and was just too good for us to muster much offense."

Ole Miss held the Crimson Tide hitless through the first six innings, while the Rebels only came up with two hits through the first six innings before pushing a run across in the seventh.

Alabama broke the stalemate in the seventh inning, using a walk and a bunt single to put two men on with no outs. The Crimson Tide got men at the corners with two outs, using a fly out to center field before Clay Jones came up with an RBI double to left field to drive in a run and give Alabama the 1-0 lead. With the run, Ole Miss turned to the bullpen for left-hander Matt Tracy.

Tracy got the Rebels out of the inning with a fly out to centerfield from Kindred.

The Rebels answered in the eighth when Matt Smith came up with an RBI single with two outs that scored Taylor Hashman from second. Hashman walked before taking second on a groundout to first by Miles Hamblin to get into scoring position for the Smith hit that tied the game at one.

The Crimson Tide responded to the Rebel rally with one of its own in the bottom half of the inning as a single and a walk put two men on with two outs for Taylor Dugas. A passed ball advanced both runners to scoring position before Dugas drew a walk to load the bases. Another passed ball pushed the go-ahead run across before Josh Rutledge came up with a single to left that drove in two more runs and put Alabama up 4-1.

Ole Miss then went to the bullpen for right-hander Trent Rothlin to relieve Tracy who got the Rebels out of the inning, but Ole Miss would not manage another rally in the ninth as Alabama claimed the win.

The two teams will play the final game of the series at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
