Rebels Sweep Bulldogs With 19-11 Win

5/2/2010 | Baseball

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Rebels capitalized on timely hits and Bulldog errors on Sunday as No. 14 Ole Miss (33-13, 14-7 SEC) defeated Mississippi State (20-23, 5-16 SEC) by a score of 19-11 in a game shortened by curfew.

The seven-inning win gave the Rebels a series sweep of Mississippi State and the program's first sweep of the Bulldogs in Starkville since the 1972 season. It also marked the second consecutive sweep in conference play and ran the Rebels' win streak out to 10 games.

It also pushed Ole Miss to the top of the SEC West standings as Arkansas dropped a series to Auburn leaving both teams with a 14-7 record in conference play heading into a showdown this coming weekend in Oxford.

The Rebels got three home runs on the afternoon, including a three-run shot from Taylor Hashman, a two-run shot from Matt Snyder and a solo shot from Tim Ferguson on the way to the win.

Eric Callender (4-1) picked up the win in relief as he worked 3.0 innings and four runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Mississippi State reliever Chad Girodo (1-3) took the loss as he entered the game in the third inning and worked 2.2 innings while allowing four runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout. All four runs were unearned.

"It was just a crazy, crazy baseball game," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "I'm proud of the guys hanging in there. It was a long, hard-fought weekend. We played well offensively today and got some clutch hits with two outs. They played great offensively as well. At times it seemed like the only way to get an out was to strike somebody out. We're fortunate that we swung it well today, in a day when we needed all the hits."

Ole Miss got on the board in the first inning, loading the bases before walks of Alex Yarbrough and Taylor Hashman pushed two men across the plate and gave the Rebels the early lead.

Mississippi State answered, using a three-run home run from Russ Sneed with two outs to push back in the lead and take a 3-2 lead on the Rebels. A walk and a pair of singles pushed a third run across as the Bulldogs added a fourth run in the inning, all with two outs.

The Rebels pushed back into the lead in the second, plating four runs of their own. Ole Miss loaded the bases with back-to-back singles and a throwing error on a sac bunt attempt from Kevin Mort. A wild pitch allowed Miles Hamblin to score from third and move two men to scoring position. A groundout to short from Matt Smith scored a second run before a home run from Matt Snyder capped the rally and put the Rebels on top 6-4.

Mississippi State cut into the lead in the home half of the second, plating a run on a single from Ryan Duffy that drove in Vickerson from second and pulled the Bulldogs within one at 6-5.

Ole Miss again put together a rally, using a sac fly from Tim Ferguson to score Hashman and a triple from Kevin Mort to drive in Taylor Hightower and give the Rebels an 8-5 lead. Hashman and Hightower opened the inning with a walk and a single.

The Bulldogs again answered with their own rally to cut the lead to one again at 8-7. Mississippi State got a double and a walk to put two men on before Vickerson's single to centerfield drove in a run and moved a man to third. A wild pitch then allowed a second run to score before the Rebels would get out of the inning.

Mississippi State then tied the game at eight in the fourth inning with a two-out single to left field that scored Sneed who had reached on a fielder's choice.

Ole Miss then pushed out in front again with a four-run fifth inning as the Rebels drove in four unearned runs. A throwing error with one out put Ferguson on with one out before a two-out walk of Matt Smith kept things alive. A single from Matt Snyder and a triple from Zach Miller pushed three runs home before an Alex Yarbrough double drove in Miller.

The Rebels added six more runs in the sixth inning, capped by a three-run home run from Hashman as Ole Miss sent nine men to the plate for the second straight inning. The three-run shot from Hashman pushed the Rebels out to an 18-8 lead.

Mississippi State answered in the bottom of the sixth, using a two-out double from Jonathan Ogden to drive two runs home. A wild pitch moved Ogden to third and a hit by pitch put men at the corners before Luke Adkins' RBI single drove in a third run to cut the lead to seven at 18-11 and send the Rebels to the bullpen for Matt Crouse. Crouse got a fly out from Connor Powers to end the inning.

Ferguson hit a solo home run in the seventh to extend the Rebels' lead back out to 19-11.

Due to a weather delay that forced a delay in the game, the game was called after seven innings of play. Conference rules do not permit a game to be resumed after 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Ole Miss will return to action on Friday when the Rebels host Arkansas in a three-game series at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised by ESPNU.
