Rebels Drop Series To No. 16 Auburn

5/22/2010 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. - In his second game back in the lineup, Matt Snyder went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, a run scored and an RBI to pace the Rebel offense, but it wasn't enough as No. 16 Ole Miss (36-19, 16-13 SEC) fell to No. 16 Auburn (38-17, 19-10 SEC) by a score of 18-4 on Saturday.

Alex Yarbrough also came up with a bases-loaded RBI in the fourth inning as the Rebels plated four runs, but Auburn out-slugged Ole Miss, using five home runs to power to the win.

Aaron Barrett (7-3) suffered the loss for the Rebels as he allowed eight runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.

Auburn reliever Slade Smith (3-0) picked up the win as he worked 5.2 scoreless innings and allowed five hits with five strikeouts to close out the game for the Tigers. Auburn starter Cole Nelson gave up four runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work and was not eligible for the win.

"[Auburn] was really good tonight and we have to do more than we did," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. ""Twenty hits, 18 runs, five home runs; But we had 13 walks, and you can't do that against any offense and expect to succeed. Aaron [Barrett] and Matt [Tracy] walked nine guys in the first five innings. That's almost two base runners an inning. You can't survive that."

Auburn struck first, using a two-run home run from Dan Gamache to put the Tigers up 2-0 in the second inning. Ryan Jenkins scored on the play after doubling in the previous at bat to reach base for the hit from Gamache.

The Tigers extended the lead in the third, this time using a three run shot from Jenkins to push Auburn out to a 5-0 lead. A double and a walk put two men on before Trent Mummey doubled to right field to drive in a sixth run and send the Rebels to the bullpen for Matt Tracy. Brian Fletcher then hit a three-run home run to push the Tigers out 9-0 before the Ole Miss would get out of the inning on a foul fly to first base from Hunter Morris.

Auburn added a 10th run in the fourth inning, Justin Hargett singled to drive in Casey McElroy who drew a walk earlier in the inning before a wild pitch and a single from Gamache moved him to third.

Ole Miss rallied in the fourth, opening the frame with back-to-back doubles from Matt Smith and Matt Snyder to push the Rebels' first run across. Ole Miss then loaded the bases before Alex Yarbrough came up with a two-RBI single through the left side and advanced to second on the throw home as Auburn threw home. Mike Snyder then drew a walk to load the bases again and send the Tigers to the bullpen for Slade Smith. Miles Hamblin hit a sac fly to the wall in left field to plate a fourth run before Auburn would get out of the inning on a groundout.

Fletcher opened up the fifth inning with his second home run of the game, pushing the Auburn lead out to 11-4 before the Tigers would manage to push two more runs across in the inning to take the lead back out to nine runs at 13-4.

Auburn used a five fun sixth inning to continue to build on the lead, taking the advantage out to 18-4.

Ole Miss' Eric Callender would hold the Tigers off down the stretch, but the Rebels were never able to mount a rally as Auburn clinched the series - and the SEC's Western Division - with the win. Callender worked the final 3.0 innings, allowing only two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Rebels and Tigers will conclude the series in the regular-season finale on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
