Rebels Fall To No. 16 Auburn In Series Finale
5/23/2010 | Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. - Matt Snyder continued to produce for the Rebels in his return to the lineup, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI as he hit a home run in the second inning of an 11-1 loss on Saturday as No. 16 Ole Miss (36-20, 16-14 SEC) fell to No. 16 Auburn (39-17, 20-10 SEC) in the regular-season finale.
With the regular season completed, Ole Miss now turns its focus to Hoover, Ala., and Regions Park, the site of the Southeastern Conference Tournament where the sixth-seeded Rebels will face the third-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday afternoon. The game between Ole Miss and South Carolina will be the second of the day and take place approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the day's first game between Auburn and Alabama that begins at 9:30 a.m.
David Goforth (1-5) suffered the loss for the Rebels in the final game of the regular season as he allowed seven runs - five earned - on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
Auburn starter Grant Dayton (8-2) picked up the win as he held the Rebels to one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Michael Hurst picked up his second save of the season as he closed out the game and held Ole Miss to one hit with three strikeouts in the final 4.0 innings of play.
"It was all about that third inning today where it just blew up and we didn't really give ourselves a chance," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "It was a combination of walks, a very good offense and errors that extended the inning. It's disappointing to end playing like this at home in front of great fans, but the only solace is that we get to play next week at Hoover and hopefully start playing well again and get hot in the post-season."
Auburn jumped out to an early lead with a two-run home run from Trent Mummey in the first inning that scored lead-off hitter Justin Fradejas. Fradejas singled to open the game and stole second before the Mummey hit.
Matt Snyder cut the lead in half in the second when he opened the home half of the frame with a solo shot to left center that put the score at 2-1.
Auburn responded in the third inning, pushing seven runs across the plate as the Tigers started the inning with a double and back-to-back singles to push the first run across. A sac bunt moved runners to second and third Tony Caldwell laid down a bunt single that scored a run and put runners at the corners. A throwing error on a pick-off attempt moved Caldwell to second and allowed a third run to score before a Dan Gamache single moved Caldwell to third and sent the Rebels to the bullpen for Rory McKean.
Another sac bunt scored Caldwell and a fielding error at first on a grounder from Justin Fradejas put two men on. Mummey then came up with a double that drove in both runners and pushed the Tiger lead out to 8-1. A walk of Brian Fletcher brought Hunter Morris to the plate who came up with an RBI single to push the Tigers on top 9-1 before McKean would get Patterson to line out to left to end the inning.
Auburn pushed out to the final margin of victory in the ninth, capitalizing on a fielding error at first with two men on when Morris hit a grounder to first that was misplayed and allowed the runners on second and third to score and push the Tigers to a final 11-1 score.
