Ole Miss Falls To LSU At SEC Tournament
5/29/2010 | Baseball
HOOVER, Ala. - The Rebel baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament for the fifth time in the last six years, but could get no further as No. 21 Ole Miss (38-22) fell to LSU (39-20) by a score of 8-0 in a seven-inning elimination game on Saturday.
Starter Rory McKean (4-2) suffered the loss for the Rebels as he allowed four runs - three earned - on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.
LSU starter Ben Alsup (4-0) picked up the win for the Tigers as he worked a complete-game and held the Rebels to one hit with a walk and seven strikeouts.
"It was a disappointing day for us, and that's nothing to take away from LSU and their effort today," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "They outplayed us in every phase of the game and played really well. They were swinging the bat well and Ben Alsup was tremendous. I was disappointed in our energy. They had a lot more energy than we did and played better today."
LSU struck first using a pair of singles and a fielding error in center field to put two men in scoring position before Blake Dean came up with a sac fly to center field scored Mikie Mathook and moved Tyler Hanover to third. McKean got the next two batters out, though, to end the inning with the Rebels trailing 1-0.
The Tigers added to the lead in the third when a wild pitch with two men on put runners in scoring position for Hanover. The LSU second baseman singled through the right side and drove in the first run, leaving runners at the corners with no outs. Dean then came up with a second sac fly to center to drive in a third run as the Tigers moved out to the three-run lead. A stolen base and a double later, LSU was up 4-0 and the Rebels turned to the bullpen for reliever Matt Tracy.
Tracy then struck out Leon Landry to end the inning with the Rebels down four runs.
LSU opened the fifth inning with a solo shot to right field from Dean to push the lead out to five runs. The Tigers continued to add to the lead in the sixth, using a double and a single to push a sixth run across. A walk of Mahtook and another double pushed two more runs home and Ole Miss turned to Jordan Cooper out of the bullpen to replace reliever Eric Callender with the Rebels down 8-0.
Jordan Cooper got the Rebels out of the inning with a fly out and a ground ball into a double play and sent the game into the seventh inning.
Ole Miss could not get a rally going in the seventh inning, falling to the Tigers in the semifinal game.
The Rebels will now return home and await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament Field. The announcement of the 16 host sites will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday with the announcement of the field of 64 at 11:30 a.m. on Monday on ESPN.
