Rebel Netters Conlcude Play At SEC Indoor

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team concluded play at the SEC Indoor Championships, after sophomore Jonas Lutjen dropped a tough decision to the top seed and second-ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky late Saturday afternoon in the round of 16.
Lutjen lost the first set 6-1, but hung in there in the second before Quigley closed it out 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Lutjen led Florida's Michael Alford 5-2, before Alford was forced to retire due to an ankle injury.
In other main draw singles, senior Tucker Vorster fell to Tennessee's Tennys Sandgren 7-6, 6-4, and Adrian Forberg Skogeng lost to the No. 3 seed and Georgia's No.1 player, Javier Garrapiz, 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Johan Backstrom went 2-1 in his debut for the Rebels. He had chances in his second-round match to Georgia junior Ignacio Toabada, winning the first set before falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
"We had some close matches against some of the top players. Tucker was actually serving for the first set. If he gets that then he probably wins the match, but Tennys is a very good player. Jonas was playing one of the best in the nation. Johan had chances in his second round match too. This was a good tournament for us to see what we need to work on this week in practice."
The Rebels will play their first dual match Saturday, Jan. 22 at home against Southern Miss. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center, and admission is free.
