OXFORD, Miss. - After a solid showing at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville and two-plus weeks of preparation, the No. 24 Ole Miss men's golf team will travel to Macon, Ga. to compete in one of the nation's premier tournaments--the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championships--Oct.7-9.
The challenging 15-team field will include host school Mercer, as well as three-time winner and defending champion No. 20 Georgia. Other top-25 teams in the tournament are No. 4 Chattanooga and No. 21 Georgia Tech.
Last year, the Rebels finished in fifth place--14 strokes behind the Bulldogs. Senior Billy Brozovich earned his first career top five finish thanks to a career-low 65 in the final round.
Brozovich will look for more success in Macon after a career-best third place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship.
Senior Joe David leads the Rebels with a 69.00 stroke average and two top five finishes on the young season, including a tie for third with Brozovich in Nashville. The Madison, Tenn. native has been the picture of consistency, staying under or at par in every round this season.
Joe Lewis has started his collegiate career in impressive fashion. The Savannah native will be returning to his home state after earning a ninth place finish in Nashville.
Freshman Blake Morris and sophomore Tom Brown round out the Ole Miss lineup.
"I feel like we are getting close to correcting some errors," said head coach Ernest Ross. "I see it in practice, and our stats in tournament rounds reflect that our scoring skills are getting better. This tournament has a tougher course and field, and I see it as an opportunity to `pass the test' that says we are improving. Golf is not merely a game against other players and teams, but a game to test yourself against the course. I look forward to the challenge."
