OXFORD, Miss. - For the second year in a row, weather wrecked havoc on the Ole Miss men's golf team's travels to Gainesville, Fla., for the Gator Invitational. The Rebels were supposed to fly out Thursday, but left Wednesday afternoon in the sprinter van due to the impending snow storm.
"We knew our flight had the potential to be cancelled, and it was. Therefore, we made the correct decision to drive in our sprinter van," tweeted head coach Ernest Ross soon after the team arrived in Gainesville Thursday morning.
The Gator Invitational features a strong field with five teams from the SEC. Florida is ranked No.3, LSU is ranked No. 6 and Auburn is ranked No. 13.
The Rebels will be led by defending medalist Jonathan Randolph. The senior from Brandon, Miss., trailed by two heading into the final round last year, but carded a 67 with five birdies to edge LSU's Andrew Loupe by one. Randolph leads the team with a 71.06 stroke average. He finished tied for eighth at the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational last weekend.
Joining Randolph in the lineup will be juniors Joe David and Billy Brozovich and sophomore Chad Bounds. Making his debut for the Rebels is junior college All-American Zach Primavera. The Lynn Haven, Fla. Native finished second at the Florida State Amateur this summer. He posted 20 top five finishes during his two years at Central Alabama Community College.
"We are excited to get our spring season started at the Gator Invitational," Ross said. "Despite the inclement weather, we've practiced hard, and we are ready to have a great season."
Play begins Friday with 36 holes, followed by the final round Saturday at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. Live scoring will be available by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the calendar.
