BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss men's tennis player Marcel Thiemann got a nice birthday present on Wednesday, earning SEC Player of the Week honors as announced by the league office.

Marcel, a native of Lehrte, Germany, went 4-0 in singles and doubles in leading the Rebels to a 4-0 shutout of Stetson and a 4-3 win at No.13 Florida last week. The Rebels' win over the Gators was the fifth in the last six meetings and second straight in Gainesville. The Rebels also handed Florida their first SEC loss this season.

Marcel upset the nation's No. 6 ranked player, Alexandre Lacroix, handing the Gator his first SEC loss this year. He also teamed with his brother, Chris, to clinch the doubles point, which proved to be the difference. Marcel has beaten three ranked players this spring, all in the SEC.

This is the third SEC weekly honor for Marcel, who was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice in 2009.

The Rebels begin a three-match homestand Saturday against South Carolina. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, and admission is free.
