STANFORD, Calif. - Marcel Thiemann of the Ole Miss men's tennis team won his first round match at the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday at the Taube Tennis Center, defeating UC Irvine's Chris Kearney in straight sets.
Thiemann began the day at Noon CT and was in the beginning of a first tiebreaker against Kearney before a rain delay stopped play for two hours. When play resumed, Thiemann finished off the tiebreaker 7-6(4) and then dominated the second set 6-1 to move on. This marked the second meeting in three weeks between the two players as they faced each other in the NCAA first round match. Kearney led that match 6-3, 4-5 when the Rebels clinched the win.
For the second year in a row, Thiemann will face Kentucky's Eric Quigley, who is seeded No. 7 and ranked sixth in the nation. The two have met four times and split the matches 2-2. Thiemann defeated Quigley in three sets in the third round of last year's NCAA Singles Championship to reach the quarterfinals. In their previous meeting this year during the regular season match against Kentucky, Thiemann lost 7-6(7), 6-2.
Senior Tucker Vorster was unable to finish his match and retired down 6-3, 4-3 to Virginia Tech's Luke Somen. The two-time All-SEC honoree was making his first NCAA Singles appearance.
