OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss men's golfer Jonathan Randolph will not be in West Point this weekend trying to win his second Mississippi State Amateur, as he is in Johnstown, Pa., for the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur Championship.
Randolph is among an elite field of amateur and collegiate all-stars vying for the 58th annual Sunnehanna Amateur, considered one of the "majors" of amateur golf.
The Brandon, Miss., native is a two-time All-SEC honoree and a first team All-American. He was recently named to the PING Southeast All-Region Team for the second year in a row.
While Randolph admits its bittersweet not being at Old Waverly for the State Am, which he won in 2009 and finished runner-up in 2010, he says this is an opportunity he couldn't pass up.
"I would love to play in the State Am, but this is a national amateur event with a lot of great players. If I want to have a chance at making the Walker Cup team, which I still have as my goal, then I have to play well in as many national amateur events as I can."
Randolph tees off at 9:40 a.m. Thursday with the ACC Player of the Year, Ben Kohles (Virginia) and incoming Stanford freshman Marcel Puyat.
The Rebels will be represented at the Mississippi State Am with rising senior Billy Brozovich, upcoming junior Chad Bounds and sophomore Thomas Watkins. Brozovich and Bounds will tee off in the same pairing at 1:20 p.m., from No. 1, while Watkins goes out in the last group off No. 10 at 1:50 p.m. Thursday.
