OXFORD, Miss.-- After making a fifth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance this spring, the Ole Miss men's golf team tees off a new season on Monday when it begins play at the Sam H. Hall Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The tournament, a two-day event, is hosted by Southern Mississippi at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
The field consists of 15 teams, including Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Alabama, and Southern Mississippi.
The experienced senior duo of Joe David and Billy Brozovich highlight the Rebel lineup.
"It is always exciting to play the first tournament. We think we will have a strong team, but you never really know until you tee it up in competition," head coach Ernest Ross said. I believe we will be pretty solid through our entire lineup. I am proud of Billy for his hard work this summer. He is playing No. 1 for us due to his hard work and determination."
David will be competing in the 36th tournament of his collegiate career and has played in every tournament that the Rebels have participated in during his time at Ole Miss. The former SEC All-Freshman has racked up 18 top 20 finishes, including a pair of top five placements and five in the top 10.
The Madison, Tenn., native capped off the 2010-11 season with a 10th place finish at the NCAA East Regional .
Brozovich notched a pair of top 20 finishes last year, including a career-best fifth place at the Brickyard Collegiate where he shot a career-low 65 in the final round. This past summer, he reached the finals of the Cotton States Invitational and won the Greenville Invitational.
Junior Chad Bounds, a Meridian, Miss. native, will also make the trip to Hattiesburg. Bounds competed in seven tournaments as a sophomore last season. In the summer, he tied for 10th at the Mississippi State Amateur.
Joining the three veterans in the lineup for Hattiesburg will be a pair of freshmen who are expected to make an immediate impact, in Joe Lewis and Blake Morris.
Lewis, from Savannah, Ga., won the AJGA Frederica Open, Hardaway Invitational, and Rebel Invitational in 2011, and was a Regional winner for Savannah Country Day School in 2010 and 2011.
Morris, a Waterbury, Conn. native, ranked in the top 50 in the AJGA Polo Golf Rankings. He tied for third at the 2010 and 2011 Verizon Jr. Heritage, and won the 2008 AJGA Fidelity Investments Tournament.
Redshirt sophomore Tom Brown will also make the trip but will compete as an individual. Brown, who saw his 2010-11 season end after one tournament due to a wrist injury, was an SEC All-Freshman selection two seasons ago, competing in 12 tournaments and notching a seventh place finish at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate.
