MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Ole Miss soccer team played No. 16 Memphis tight Friday night but the Tigers pulled away in the second half and posted the 3-0 win at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn.
With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 3-2-1 this season while No. 16 Memphis improved to 6-0.
Entering Friday night's match, Ole Miss came into the game having only allowed one goal in its first five matches while Memphis had allowed two in five games. The Ole Miss soccer team faced its second nationally-ranked team in as many games.
Each team had several good chances in the first half, with Memphis able to break through in the 15th minute and scored what would be the game-winning goal.
Ole Miss ended the match with 10 shots (four on goal) while Memphis recorded 16 with eight on goal. Rafaelle Souza recorded four shots for the Rebels.
"I thought we played well for the first 70 minutes and had to chase the game," head coach Matt Mott said. "We gave up a poor goal in the first half. I thought we came out in the second half with a lot of energy have to learn from this one and move on."
Emily Reid narrowly missed putting the Rebels up 1-0 in the 13th minute. Chelsea Heimann started the play out of the back and found Dylan Jordan. Jordan found Reid across the field but her attempt ricocheted off the crossbar and was collected by the Memphis goalkeeper.
The Tigers went up 1-0 in the 15th minute. Lizzy Simonin played a free kick from near the midfield circle into the box. Ole Miss keeper Alley Ronaldi came off her line, got upended in the box and Rasheeda Ansari was able to knock the ball into the net.
In the 24th minute, the ball bounced back to Kendyl Mygatt who blasted a low-driven shot at goal. Memphis keeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters knocked down Mygatt's shot but couldn't collect it. Rafaelle Souza was running down the loose ball but Kuhar-Pitters was able to recover and grab the ball.
In the 32nd minute, Souza had a look on a counter attack for Ole Miss. She outran three Memphis defenders and fired a shot that Kuhar-Pitters knocked out from the face of the goal.
With just under 10 minutes left in the first half, Memphis player Kaitlyn Atkins hit a shot off a free kick from 30 yards out that hit off the left post and was cleared out by Abbie Curran.
Ronaldi made another big save for the Rebels with 18 minutes left to play when she came off her line to beat a Memphis player to the ball.
Memphis threatened again in the 78th minute with a shot off the post. The Tigers added their second goal less than two minutes later on a penalty kick from Simonin. Ronaldi went the correct way on the attempt and got a hand on the ball.
The Tigers' Christabel Oduro punched in a close-range shot in the 83rd minute.
Ole Miss will host The Citadel Monday at 1 p.m.
