Rebels Win Home Opener 3-0
9/7/2012 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team opened its home season the same way it has for the past nine years now; with a win. The Rebels (4-3) took out Alabama A&M 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) in their first match of the Magnolia Invitational at the Gillom Sports Center.
"I thought it was a good win for us," Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin said. "It's good to be back home. I thought the kids did a really nice job of staying focused throughout the match and shut down Alabama A&M. Hopefully it helps us in this evening's match."
The Rebels will play again Friday at 7 p.m. CT against Rice in their second match of the Magnolia Invitational. Rice defeated North Dakota in its opening match of the tournament.
Ole Miss was led in its match by senior setter Amanda Philpot, who recorded 29 assists, eight kills and seven digs. Senior right side Allegra Wells had a match-high 11 kills against the Bulldogs, and senior libero Ashley Veach had a match-high 14 digs.
The Rebels hit at a .524 clip in the third and final set, recording 14 kills on 21 attempts and committing just three errors.
In Friday night's match against Rice, two fans will compete for a $50 Kroger card during the intermission.
