Rebels Blank State 1-0
9/19/2014 | Soccer
Sept. 19, 2014 STARKVILLE, Miss. - Ole Miss got off to a quick start, scoring in the first minute on an Addie Forbus goal as Ole Miss (6-1-2, 1-0-1 SEC) defeated Mississippi State (3-5-0, 0-1-0 SEC) by a score of 1-0 to retain possession of the Magnolia Cup on Friday.
Forbus intercepted a pass back to the keeper in the first minute of play and drove it into the net past the keeper to give the Rebels the lead right out of the gates.
It marked the first win for the Rebels in Starkville since the 2009 season and the second straight win in the annual rivalry. Ole Miss defeated the Bulldogs 5-1 last season in Oxford.
"That was a huge goal for us," said Ole Miss head coach Matthew Mott. "To go up 1-0 less than a minute in, you can't ask for a better start than that. The game was hectic after that just like we thought it would be. Both teams worked as hard as they could and played as hard as possible.
"To not give up a goal on the road in a rivalry game against a conference opponent is big time," Mott said. "It shows how well our defense played. The back line did a great job and as did Kelly McCormick in goal."
The lead would hold at the half as Ole Miss made the most of its shot to get on the board. Both teams had three shots at the half, while the Rebels lead 4-to-1 in corner kicks for the period. Senior goalkeeper Kelly McCormick posted saves on two of the Bulldogs' three shots to keep Ole Miss on top after the early Forbus goal.
Ole Miss got a good chance to add to the lead in the 65th minute with three consecutive corners, but the Bulldog defense made the play to deflect a pair of headers before the third corner went out of bounds uncontested to set up the goal kick.
The Rebels got a chance again a few minutes later when Jennifer Miller fired off a shot just outside the box in the 67th minute that was saved by the keeper to hold the score at a 1-0 lead for Ole Miss.
Despite out-shooting the Bulldogs 8-to-3 in the second half, the score would hold the rest of the way as Ole Miss picked up the clean sheet in the annual rivalry game.
The Rebels return to action on Sunday, continuing play on the road with a 5 p.m. CT contest at UCF for the final non-conference match of the regular season.
