Rebels Conclude Season in NCAA Doubles
5/21/2015 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas -- The Ole Miss men's tennis team closed the book on the season Thursday with a tight loss by Nik Scholtz and Zvonimir Babic in the NCAA Doubles Championship to Denver's Henry Craig and Alex Gasson.
Scholtz and Babic broke and led 4-2 in the first set, before the Denver duo broke back to even the set at 4-4. They would end up going to a tiebreaker, which Denver won 7-6(6) to take the early momentum. They broke Scholtz in the first game of the second set and held the rest of the way for 6-4, to advance to the second round. Scholtz and Babic did have a break point in the final game to get back on serve, but couldn't convert.
"Nik and Z were not able to convert on the few opportunities today," head coach Toby Hansson said.
Scholtz finishes the season 16-6 in singles and 12-8 in doubles. The final rankings come out the first week of June, and if he finishes in the top 20 of singles, he would become a four-time All-American. He was ranked No. 18 heading into the postseason.
"Nik had a great career here at Ole Miss, and we are grateful for his contributions to the tennis program and the university," Hansson said. "We will miss having him around. We are looking forward to following him as he takes the next step in his life. He will always be a Rebel!"
The future looks bright, as the Rebels will return six players from this year's lineup next year, including All-SEC honorees Stefan Lindmark and Gustav Hansson.
