Two Rebels Earn All-SEC Honors
5/3/2017 | Men's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss men's tennis junior Gustav Hansson and sophomore Fabian Fallert helped lead the Rebels to their 24th consecutive NCAA bid, and both were rewarded Wednesday with selection to the All-SEC Team.
Hansson earned All-SEC honors for the third year in a row and made the first team for the second straight year. Fallert earned second team honors and is one of 13 underclassmen on the All-SEC Team.
With his third selection to the All-SEC Team, Hansson becomes the seventh player in program history to earn All-SEC honors three years. He is currently ranked No. 19 in the nation with a 20-11 overall record, 11-7 in his first full year at No. 1 singles. Hansson finished 6-6 in the SEC.
"Gus has performed at a high level again this year and done very well for us at the top spot in the lineup against many of the nation's top players," head coach Toby Hansson said. "We are thrilled to see Gus be selected to the first team for the second straight year."
A huge key in the Rebels success this year, Fallert is ranked No. 23 in the nation in doubles playing at the No. 1 spot and owns a 24-6 overall singles record, 18-3 in dual matches. He tied for the second most wins in the SEC at 10-1 and clinched wins over Arkansas and Kentucky.
"After a tough freshman year, Fabi worked as hard as anyone that I've ever coached," Hansson said. "I can't say I am surprised to see Fabi making this kind of jump, but it is great to see it happening this year. He has been a vital part of our success this season playing in the top spot in doubles and going 10-1 in SEC play in singles. He not only works hard in practice, but he competes in every match until the last point and has a great attitude. I am very pleased to see Fabi being rewarded for his hard work and success on the court this year with a spot on the All SEC Team."
This marks the 24th consecutive year for Ole Miss to have a representative on the All-SEC Team.
The Rebels will face UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the NCAA Championships May 12 at 12 p.m. CT in Los Angeles, California.
