Ole Miss travels for first road matches Saturday, Sunday

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 16 ranked Ole Miss rifle team travels to West Point, New York for a pair of matches, Saturday and Sunday at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center. On Saturday, the Rebels shoot for a score alongside No. 10 Army and No. 14 Memphis, and begin its Great America Rifle Conference schedule against the Black Knights on Sunday.

Start times both days…
Smallbore: 9:00 a.m. CT.
Air Rifle: 11:45 a.m. CT (approximate).

Live results…
Live results for each match can be found at http://results.megalink.no and final results will be posted to NCAArifle.org.

The Competitors…
On Saturday, Abby Buesseler, Sophia Cuozzo, Harley Gardner, and Jillian Zakreski will look to count in both events. Randi Loudin will take aim in smallbore, while Kamilla Kisch is set to compete in air rifle. Emily Cock will also be making the trip and could be a counter on Sunday.

Scouting the Opponents…
Memphis is coming off a victory at the Tiger Open, firing a 4649 on Sept. 30. Leighton Dempster shot a match- (1175) and air rifle-best (593). Teammate Levi Clark (583) edged Dempster by one point for the top score in smallbore. Both shot at the 2018 NCAA Rifle Championships along with Army's Clayton Hanson and Payne Nunn. The Black Knights have yet to compete this season

Last meetings…
Ole Miss defeated both opponents in head-to-head matches last season. Last October, the Rebels defeated Army 4645-4624, and edged Memphis 4650-4648 in the regular season finale on Feb. 11.

Marsha's Minute…
On how scoring will work…
"In Saturday's match, we are essentially shooting for score only. Results will not count in conference standings. Saturday will provide us an opportunity to become familiar with the U.S. Military Academy range and test what we've been working on the last two weeks. Sunday, we open our Great America Rifle Conference season with a shoulder-to-shoulder match with Army."

On the parity of the GARC…
"We are pretty evenly matched with both Army and Memphis. The GARC conference race looks like it will be very close this year. As of now, two teams, defending NCAA Champion Kentucky and NCAA runner-up West Virginia, are out in front, but the other seven teams are likely to be putting up similar scores, which will make for a very interesting season. Our job will be to focus on the things that will help us improve."

On the national rankings…
"The rifle season is just getting started – in fact four top-20 teams have yet to compete. The CRCA uses a score-based system to rank teams and it doesn't work well at the beginning of the season. About half of the teams have only shot one match, so they are ranked on their first score of the year. Teams that have shot more than one match are ranked on their best score to date. Finally, the teams that haven't yet opened are ranked on their three best scores from last year."

On coaching against her son for the first time…
"I scheduled our match with Army last March, before Aaron (Flowers) had received his appointment to USMA. I am excited to be coaching one of the teams competing with Army during his first college match."
