Rebels Roll Past Tide Sunday for First Road SEC Win
10/28/2018 | Volleyball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Led by a pair of double-double performances by senior Caitlin Wernentin and junior Emily Stroup, and dynamic digging from veteran Caroline Adams, Ole Miss volleyball registered its first road victory of the season, downing Alabama 3-1 (28-30, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19).
The Rebels improve to 13-12 on the season and 3-8 in league play, while Alabama drops to 18-7 and 5-6. The win Sunday improves head Coach Steven McRoberts to 5-1 against the Tide since taking the helm (2014).
Stroup registered 19 kills and 15 digs for her league-leading 14thdouble-double, while Wernentin turned in 17 slams and a career-best 19 digs, turning in her second collegiate double-double after accomplishing the feat Friday at Auburn.
Junior Nayo Warnell added 10 kills, hitting at a team-best .391, and rookie Lauren Thompson registered her first collegiate kill, finishing the match with two and a pair of blocks. Sophomore Lauren Bars also posted a new career-best, dishing out 52 assists.
After a sluggish start to begin the contest, with the Rebels trailing by six, a huddle and lineup change fueled the Rebels through a mini-comeback. Warnell registered her first slam of the match to switch the momentum and lead Ole Miss to even the score at 9-9 after a four-point run.
After back-to-back kills from Scott and an Alabama attack error, the Rebels continued to narrow the gap at 18-15. The Tide still remained in control, welcoming set point at 24-21 before Ole Miss used another 3-0 run (including a set of kills from Stroup) to even things at 24. The two squads proceeded through five more set points before an unfortunate block error handed Alabama the frame 30-28.
The Rebels began in control in the second set, leading 12-8 before separate three and four-point rallies put Alabama back on top 15-13. The Tide continued to lead until the 22-20 mark, when Ole Miss used six straight points, guided by Warnell, Wernentin, and Stroup, to secure the set 25-22 and even the match.
The third frame started as a back-and-forth affair until the 9-9 mark, when the Rebels used a 4-0 run to build a 12-9 lead. They then used a set of 3-0 rallies to add some cushion, leading by as many as six points at 21-15 after a pair of slams from Warnell. A decisive final kill from Stroup handed Ole Miss the set 25-21 and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Rebels continued to use small rallies in the fourth set, taking three straight to take a 7-4 lead, building on the lead with a 3-0 lead to go up 22-15. The final two kills came fittingly from Wernentin and Stroup, sealing the victory with a 25-19 finale.
