Stroup Ignites for Career Night, but Rebels Unable to Hold off No. 25 Tennessee

11/2/2018 | Volleyball

Junior outside Emily Stroup records 1000th career kill and breaks program record Friday

OXFORD, Miss. --   Led by a career night from junior Emily Stroup, Ole Miss volleyball took No. 25 Tennessee to the ropes Friday in Gillom Athletics Performance Center, taking the first set 25-21 before battling but falling in the next three 21-25, 24-26, 23-25.

The Rebels slip to .500 on the year at 13-13, dropping to 3-9 in SEC play, while the Volunteers improve to 19-5 and 10-2.

Stroup joined an elite group, registering her 1,000thcareer kill during the third set of Friday's match. She turned in 16 through the first two frames, and finished the night with a single-match program record 31, breaking her own that she set in early October against LSU. She now sits just six kills away from replacing herself as the program's single-season kills leader, currently with 469 on the year.

Senior Caitlin Wernentin and sophomore Lauren Bars also contributed, each turning in double-double performances. For Wernentin, it marks the third consecutive double-double contest as she turned in 10 kills and 17 digs. Bars records her second of the season, posting a season-high 15 digs and dishing out 47 assists.

After surrendering the first point of the contest, the Rebels took the next four points to establish momentum right away. Ole Miss continued to control, building a seven-point advantage at 16-9 after back-to-back miscues from the Volunteers and mixed with an Aubrey Sultemeier slam.

The Rebels remained in the driver's seat, up 20-12 after another Sultemeier kill. Tennessee began to threaten, capitalizing on three consecutive Ole Miss attack errors to to inch up to 21-15. After yet another Volunteer error set up game point for the Rebels, Tennessee used a block and a kill from sophomore transfer Addisyn Rowe to close in at 24-21. Stroup sealed the set with a commanding slam, her sixth of the frame, to hand the Rebels a 25-21 victory and 1-0 lead in the match.

Things remained close in the second set, with the Volunteers carrying the slight edge, aided by a 4-0 rally early on. Things began to swing in the Rebels favor midway through when Stroup delivered a slam after a grueling seven-volley session to bring Ole Miss within two at 17-15. She went on to secure the Rebels' next three points with a trio of kills, closing in at 22-19 after assistance via a Sultemeier rejection.

The comeback was ill-lived, as the Volunteers pulled through, taking the game 25-20 and evening the match.

Set 3 was a back-and-forth affair until the Rebels found some edge with a 3-0 run to take a 10-12 lead. Things continued in a cat-and-mouse ordeal, until Ole Miss secured six consecutive points to steal the lead and build a two-point advantage at 23-21.  A service error handed the Rebels set point as they regained control, but the Volunteers won the final four points (including two Rebel attack errors) to retake the frame at 26-24 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set again saw the Rebels controlling late, after using a 3-0 run to even the score at 16 thanks to kills from Wernentin and Stroup. After trading points over the next few sequences, the Rebels again swung the momentum in their favor with a 4-0 rally, aided by three blocks from Sultemeier.

Up 21-18, Tennessee then took five straight points, riding the attacking of Rowe and junior outside Tessa Grubbs, to takeover the contest at 23-21. Sultemeier then cut the lead to one with a kill, and sophomore outside Leah Mulkey did the same on match point, but a block from the Volunteers finalized the victory as Tennessee stole the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Stroup finished the contest on a .364 clip, while Sultemeier fell one shy of tying her season-high in blocks.  Grubbs and Rowe paced the Volunteers, recording 22 and 17 kills respectively.
