Stroup Breaks Single Season Kills Record, but Rebs Suffer Sweep

11/4/2018 | Volleyball

Ole Miss falls to No. 12 Kentucky Sunday

OXFORD, Miss. --   Ole Miss volleyball dropped its Sunday contest, suffering a sweep to No. 12 Kentucky by scores of 19-25, 21-25, 19-25 in Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Three Rebels tallied double-digit digs, led by junior Nicole Purcell's 12. The Rebels limited the league's hitting percentage leaders to a .258 clip, posting seven blocks on the day. Junior Emily Stroup delivered once again, tallying 12 kills and chiseling her name onto another Ole Miss program record, passing herself for single-season kills. The Fargo, N.D., native turned in 31 Friday night, tallying her 1000th career kill and breaking a single-match record for kills in the process.

The two squads traded points throughout the opening stanza, going through 10 tied scores and three lead changes before eclipsing the 20-point mark. The Rebels took the first of the contest, and the game of cat-and-mouse began, as neither team could build more than a two-point run.

The Wildcats found a late surge of momentum, taking six of seven points to build a four-point deficit at 22-18, then sealed the set with the final three points of the frame (25-19).

Stroup tallied six kills in the set, the final one breaking her own record with 475 kills at the time.

After UK took four of the first five points to begin Set 2, the Rebels began to chip away, and the back-and-forth picked right back up, as the two squads endured 12 ties reaching the 21-21 mark. A Wildcat attack error aided by a Wernentin kill and Stroup block evened things for the Rebels, but Kentucky took advantage of three Ole Miss errors to secure the game with a 25-21 victory.

The third set found the Rebels in the driver's seat, taking the four straight points to begin the frame. The Wildcats quickly reversed the momentum, putting up a 5-0 run to take the lead. The process continued, with Ole Miss taking the next three on kills from sophomores Lauren Bars and Leah Mulkey and another slam from Stroup.

After another Mulkey kill and a block from Warnell gave the Rebels a 13-10 lead, UK again responded with a rally, taking three straight to even the set once again. The Wildcats used another 4-0 run to build a 21-17 lead late into the frame. Keeping trend with the rest of the set, the Wildcats closed the contest with yet another 3-0 rally, taking the 25-19 set and the match 3-0.
