Adams Digs, Stroup Swings, but Rebels Fall in Five at LSU

11/7/2018 | Volleyball

Junior Emily Stroup breaks her own four-day old record with 32 kills

BATON ROUGE--   Despite four Rebels with career-best outings, Ole Miss Volleyball dropped a heartbreaker Wednesday in Baton Rouge, falling in five sets to LSU at the Maravich Center (25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 14-16).  The match marks the third straight between the Tigers and Rebels to go to five sets, and the fourth of the last five.

The Tigers pick up their third straight victory and move to 10-14, 5-8 on the season, while Ole Miss slips to 13-15, 3-11.

Junior Emily Stroup, who four days ago set a program single-match record with 31 kills (11/2 vs. No. 25 Tennessee), broke the same record for the third time this season, finishing the match with 32, hitting at a .282 clip. The match marks the 10thcontest this season Stroup has recorded at least 20 kills, and the third registering 30 or more.

Senior libero Caroline Adams also turned in a career best, recording 33 digs. Freshman Aubrey Sultemeier turned in a career-high 14 kills, leading the squad on the night with a .480 efficiency. Veteran Caitlin Wernentin turned in her fourth double-double in the last five games, finishing the evening with 10 kills and falling one shy of matching her career-best with 18 digs.

Sophomore setter Lauren Bars also turned in a double-double, her third of the season with13 digs and a career-best 57 assists, and junior Nicole Purcell added a season-high 20 digs.

The Rebels came out dominant in the opening stanza, taking the first six of seven points in the contest and leading by as many as six points on two separate occasions at the 16-10 mark. The squad was led by dynamic digging from Adams, who tallied seven digs in the set, moving into second place in program history with 1,378 career digs (at the time).

The Tigers used five straight points to cut the lead to one point at 16-15, to which Ole Miss responded with a Nicole Purcell service ace sandwiched between two Sultemeier kills to regain some cushion. The Rebels presented set point at 24-21, but LSU capitalized on back-to-back Rebel errors to come within one again before a Caitlin Wernentin kill sealed the set 25-23 and gave Ole Miss the early 1-0 match advantage.

The second set was a game of rallies, as LSU put together a six-point run to take a short-lived lead at 11-8 before the Rebels replied with a 5-0 sequence of their own to regain the lead at 13-11. The squad then added cushion with a 4-0 run right after, going up 17-12. During those nine points, Stroup registered four kills.

LSU responded with another run, this one with six straight points to take a 20-17 lead. The Tigers continued to carry the momentum, taking the set 25-22 and evening the match at a set apiece.

The Rebels replied by taking the first three points of the third frame, then continuing to build a lead from there. After a 4-0 and 3-0 run put Ole Miss up by eight points at 16-8 and then again at 18-10, the Tigers once again began to claw back into the contest, coming as close as four before Ole Miss went on to retake the match lead with a 25-19 victory.

The fourth set found the Rebels trailing after LSU used a 3-0 and 4-0 sequence to build an early advantage. Ole Miss quickly switched the momentum, using their own three-point run, capped off by a Sultemeier kill, to even things at 9-9 before taking control. The Rebels carried a lead as late as 19-17 before the two squads began trading points.

The two squads went through three ties all from the 19-19 point on, Ole Miss battling back with a 3-0 rally to even things at 23-23 before succumbing to back-to-back Tiger kills to drop the fourth frame 25-23.

It was a back-and-forth affair early in the finale, and the Rebels looked to build some cushion after taking a 7-5 lead. The advantage was short lived as LSU took five of the next six points, including four in a row, to switch control and take a 10-8 lead.

Down to match point, Stroup delivered her record-breaking kill to even the contest once again at 14-14, but LSU pulled through to win its third straight contest after taking the set 16-14.
