Volleyball Falls in Four Sunday in College Station

11/11/2018 | Volleyball

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS --   A dynamic first set proved not enough for Ole Miss Volleyball, who dropped a Sunday showdown at Texas A&M in Reed Arena, falling 3-1 (25-21, 15-25, 22-25, 21-25).

Junior Emily Stroup turned in 22 kills, her 11thmatch of the season with 20 or more. Senior libero Caroline Adams added a team-best 12 digs, and freshman Aubrey Sultemeier tallied six blocks. Sophomores Lauren Bars and Leah Mulkey each added six kills, with Bars registering a team-high .667 efficiency.

The Rebels found their groove early in the opening stanza, using a four-point rally to take control and build a 10-8 advantage. Ole Miss continued to play with momentum, leading the remainder of the frame. After a pancake dig followed by kill from Stroup took the Rebels into a timeout up 15-12, the squad built a lead by as many as six points, sealing the set with Stroup's 10thkill of the frame to win 25-21.

Things were much tighter in game two, as the two squads traded points and A&M used a 3-0 run to tie the contest at 10-10 and then subsequently steal the lead. The Aggies remained in the driver's seat for the duration of the frame, winning 25-15 and evening the match at a set apiece. Despite the outcome, the Rebels were still hitting a strong .333 heading after the first two games.

The Rebels started the third set much like the other two, using a block from Mulkey and Sultemeier to take an 8-5 lead and remain steady early on. A&M responded with a pair of 3-0 rallies to switch momentum and take the lead, continuing to hold the same three-point cushion.

A&M maintained control as Ole Miss challenged. A trio of Stroup kills and a TAMU error put the Rebels on a 4-0 run and down by just one at 22-21, but couldn't pull off the comeback, dropping the set 25-22.

Six consecutive points for the Aggies in the beginning of the fourth frame proved too detrimental for the Rebels, who fell behind early and suffered from another run from A&M, a 4-0 rally late to build the lead to 18-12.

Ole Miss again began to chip away, led by a late-set surge from Sultemeier, who posted two kills to bring the Rebels within three. After being down to match point, kills by Stroup and Mulkey kept Ole Miss alive, but the comeback was ultimately stifled on a slam from the Aggies' season-kills leader, junior Hollann Hans.

UP NEXT
The Rebels wrap up the three-game road swing, heading to Columbia, S.C. to face the Gamecocks Friday. South Carolina is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches' Poll, becoming the seventh team Ole Miss will face this season to either be ranked or be receiving votes.
