OXFORD, Miss. – On Friday afternoon, Mimi Reid will take the court for the first time as an Ole Miss Rebel. But unlike most of her teammates making their debuts, Reid spent 2017-18 in Oxford recovering from a torn Achilles last preseason.

"I stepped and turned at half court, and I just felt something pop," Reid said. "I heard it, felt it, everything. Initially I thought I hurt my ankle so that is how I reacted to it."

An MRI later revealed it was indeed a torn Achilles, and that her chance to see the floor as a Rebel would have to wait until next year.

For Reid, the most difficult part of recovery was listening to her body instead of her head.

"I wanted to master everything so fast to get back on the court and I think that was my setback a little bit, because my mind was moving faster than my Achilles," Reid said. "That made it tough for me as a player."

Despite the long process, Reid finished the recovery process and is ready for the 2018-19 season to begin with a brand new coaching staff under first-year head coach, Yolett McPhee-McCuin.

"It's been fun," Reid said. "I enjoy coming to practice every day and I enjoy seeing the coaches because they bring light to a dead situation some times. You can have a bad day, but seeing them can spark your mood. I feel the love, I feel the connection between the coaches and the players."

Heading into the season, Reid is most excited to get back out on the court for the first time since high school and her days as the only female member of the JellyFam crew out of New York City – where she was dubbed the "First Lady of Jelly" on the way to becoming a four-star recruit at The Patrick School in New Jersey.

"I'm just going to be in the moment," Reid said. "I am going to cherish playing college basketball for the first time."
