Rebel Soccer Tops Troy in Mobile
8/30/2018 | Soccer
MOBILE, Ala. – Falling behind early, Ole Miss (4-1) battled back and showed its class Thursday afternoon, topping Troy (1-4) 5-2 in a neutral site match at The Cage in Mobile.
Despite Ole Miss completely dominating possession in the early going, it was the Trojans that took the early lead in the 15th-minute. A well-timed, lofted through ball sent Kendra Cashion on goal and the freshman slipped the ball under Marnie Merritt for the opening goal.
The Rebels struck back off a set-piece six minute later to tie the match up. Grace Johnson delivered a free kick into the 18 and CeCe Kizer got on the end of it, putting the deftest of touches on the ball to send it past the keeper.
With Ole Miss continuing to press forward throughout the rest of the half, Channing Foster gave the Rebels the lead just before the break, converting from the penalty spot after Julia Phillips was pulled down in the box.
It didn't take Ole Miss long to get back going after the half, doubling its lead in the 49th-minute. Mary Kate Smith sent in a dangerous cross to the far post and Madisyn Pezzino hit it first time to find Haleigh Stackpole with a square ball, providing the freshman a tap-in.
Molly Martin nearly scored a fourth for Ole Miss in the 55th-minute, flicking the ball over the keeper's head with her back to goal. Unluckily, the bounce was just too strong as the ball narrowly cleared the bar.
Just moments later, a turnover at midfield came back to cost the Rebels as the Trojans struck on the counter to close the Ole Miss lead to a single goal.
However, the familiar connection of Gabby Little and Kizer regained some breathing room for Ole Miss in the 75th-minute. Little found a wide-open Kizer in the middle of the box and the senior finished it off to reclaim a two-goal advantage for the Rebs.
With the win safely in hand in the waning moments, Marisa Kutchma put the cherry on top in the 90th-minute, scoring off of a Maddy Houghton feed to cap the victory.
Now having some familiarity with the grounds, Ole Miss will return to The Cage on Sunday, facing the home South Alabama Jaguars at 1:30 p.m.
