Ole Miss Sweeps Rebel Invite, Downs Southern Miss 3-2 Sunday

9/2/2018 | Volleyball

Junior Emily Stroup named Tournament MVP

OXFORD, Miss. –  Ole Miss posted a perfect record over the weekend, sweeping the Rebel Invitational and claiming the tournament title after a grueling five-setter (27-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-25, 15-10) over in-state foe Southern Miss Sunday at Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Junior outside Emily Stroup was crowned Tournament MVP, finishing the weekend with 74 kills, averaging nearly five a set and posting two double-doubles. Junior setter Jordan Fate and freshman middle Aubrey Sultemeier were also named to the All-Tournament team after big weekends of their own.

Stroup finished with 20 kills and 10 digs Sunday, while Sultemeier matched a career-high, tallying 11 kills, hitting at an impressive .391. Senior Caitlin Wernentin recorded her third straight 11-kill match.

In tune with the rest of the weekend, the first set was another game of cat-and-mouse, featuring 15 ties and six lead changes. Some strong play late in the set from the Rebels front line of Sultemeier and Stroup fueled an Ole Miss comeback after being down 24-21.

The Rebels went on a 4-0 run courtesy of back-to-back kills from Stroup and a pair of slams from Sultemeier before Stroup sealed the victory with a powerful swing to give Ole Miss the 27-25 win.

The Rebels cruised through Set 2, leading by as many as eight points. A 6-0 and 4-0 run gave Ole Miss some cushion, which came in handy late in the frame when the Golden Eagles took three straight points to pressure before sophomore setter Lauren Bars supplied a quick-tip kill to secure the 25-20 victory.

A six-point lead in favor of the Golden Eagles provided some adversity for the Rebels in Set 3, who were only able to put together a run of three and four points each and unable to narrow the gap, falling 25-19.

The Rebels couldn't regroup from their sluggish third frame, unable to overcome as much as a 10-point deficit, falling 25-15 in the fourth set.

Ole Miss fired back in the finale, led by an early five-point rally and strong defensive play at the net from Sultemeier. The freshman posted three rejections in the final frame and finished with seven on the day.
