Rebels Sweep Chicago State in GSU Invite Opener

ATLANTA – Ole Miss volleyball secured its second sweep of the season, taking down Chicago State in straight sets in the opening contest of the Georgia State Invitational, held at the GSU Sports Arena.
Sophomore Leah Mulkey guided the Rebels in the first two frames, slamming nine kills on a .316 hitting efficiency. Junior Emily Stroup delivered an impressive final frame, posting seven kills to finish with 15 on the day. Senior Caitlin Wernentin also tallied nine kills. Mulkey and libero Caroline Adams each collected nine digs, with junior Nicole Purcell following closely behind with eight.
The Rebels came out with force, taking a 5-1 lead and then going up 10-4 to create some cushion in the opening stanza. The Cougars worked a small comeback, coming within one at 17-16, before late offensive surges from Wernentin, middle Nayo Warnell, Mulkey, and Stroup pushed Rebels to victory at 25-20.
Chicago State pressured in Set 2, using two separate 3-0 runs and a 4-0 rally to maintain the lead for most of the second frame. The Cougars and Rebels traded points for almost the entire contest, going through 10 tied scores before Ole Miss mounted a comeback, taking five of the last six points to win 25-23.
Paced by Stroup, the third and ultimately final frame found the Rebels in control, leading by as many as eight points before cruising to victory 25-18 and taking the match 3-0.
Warnell finished the day with four blocks, a season-high, and added five kills.
Ole Miss continues with the tournament Saturday, taking on Sam Houston State at 9 a.m. CT before finishing the day with host Georgia State at 5:30 p.m. CT. The Sam Houston State match will be streamed via Facebook Live, and fans can stream the Georgia State contest via their website.
