Rebels to Compete at Site of 2017 U.S. Open

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Ole Miss men's golf team travels to Milwaukee for the Marquette Intercollegiate (Sept. 30-Oct. 2). The three-day event will be played at Erin Hills, host of the 2017 U.S. Open, which will be playing 7,869 yards and par 72.

The 11-team field consists of the host Marquette, No. 11 Arizona State, Iowa, McNeese State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, UC Davis, Utah, and Wisconsin and Ole Miss.

Ole Miss has received votes in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches poll, as has three other teams in the field not including No. 11 Arizona State.

Head coach Chris Malloy will be taking six Rebels to compete at the event. Braden Thornberry will be in the number one position, followed by Jackson Suber, Cecil Wegener, Charlie Miller, and Jack Gnam. Josh Seiple will compete as an individual.

"We are looking forward to getting back into tournament play this weekend," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We have three freshmen in our lineup that are looking to make the most of this opportunity. As a coach, that is very encouraging to have these young guys trying to make a statement early in the season. This course is extremely challenging, however, there are plenty of opportunities for birdies as well."

Thornberry, Suber and Miller lead the Ole Miss lineup for the third time this season. Suber and Thornberry have each recorded a pair of top-10 finishes to begin the season, posting scoring averages of 71.4 and 71.8, respectively. Competing in his first two tournaments as a Rebel, Miller tied for 25th at the Ocean Course Invitational before tying for 33rd at the Shoal Creek Invitational to remain on the travel squad.

After making his collegiate debut as an individual at the Shoal Creek Invitational last week, Gnam earned a spot in the Rebel lineup. The freshman used a pair of 72s to fire a 54-hole total of 223 and tie for 33rd.

Last year, Ole Miss finished in a tie for eighth as a team with Thornberry (71-70-75--216) notching a top-5 finish individually. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native is one of 11 golfers to record a 67 or better in the five-year history of the tournament. Thornberry shot a 5-under 67 as a freshman, helping the Rebels shoot a 282 (-6) as a team during the second round of the 2015 tournament.

The first round begins Sunday morning with split tee times off holes 1 and 10 starting at 9:55 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with players from Marquette and UC Davis.
