Three Rebels have Career Days as Thornberry Breaks Another Program Record
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Ole Miss men's golf team answered head coach Chris Malloy's call and ended the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills with an 11-under 277. The Rebels topped off their best round of the tournament with 23 birdies to finish fourth with a three-day total of 290-304-277—871.
Braden Thornberry made history on the final day, shooting a 4-under 68 to finish tied for fifth. The top-10 put Thornberry ahead of Darren Cole (1986 graduate) as the program leader in top-10 finishes for a career. The senior and No. 1 amateur in the world had two eagles in the final round that propelled him into the top 10.
Charlie Miller led the Rebels on the final day, firing a career-best 67 (-5). After making the turn, the freshman made three straight birdies and never looked back, shooting a five-under 31 on the back nine. Miller became one of only 12 golfers ever to shoot a 67 through the five-year history of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills. Miller accounted for six of the Rebel birdies on the last day.
Josh Seiple had a career-best finish after going 3-under (70-72-71--213) to place third individually. The senior was consistent throughout the tournament and didn't let the conditions affect his play on the first two days. Seiple led the team in pars with 35 over the three days.
Cecil Wegener finished tied for 12th after a final round even par 72. The sophomore was second on the team in birdies with 12 through 54 holes. Wegener joined Thornberry at playing the par 4's at 1-under to pace the 72-player field.
Closing out his first tournament in the Ole Miss lineup, freshman Jack Gnam fired a 70 (-2) to contribute to the team's final round score. The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native tied for 39th (77-78-70—225).
"It was certainly a better day for our team and a good bounce back round after yesterday," said head coach Chris Malloy. "I challenged this group after our second round, and they really did a great job responding. There are plenty of positives to build on from today and take into next weekend"
The Rebels will compete for the third week in a row when they travel to Nashville to compete in the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate (Oct. 7-9).
