Rebels Move Up Leaderboard on Final Day
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With a team total of 293 (+5) for the second consecutive day, the Ole Miss men's golf team moved up the leaderboard for a fifth-place finish in the Intercollegiate at The Grove. The Rebels (284-293-293—870) bested Kennesaw State (283-288-300—871) by seven strokes during the final round to jump into the top five.
Cecil Wegener used another even-par 72 to place in the top 10 (T-8th), earning his best finish of the fall. Entering the final round at 3-under, the sophomore hit his second shot to seven feet to set up an eagle at the par-5 second. Two holes later, a birdie on No. 4 pushed him to 6-under and just two shots off the lead. A string of four bogeys over the next five holes dropped Wegener out of contention for medalist honors. Nonetheless, he rebounded with birdies on two of his last three holes, including a chip-in out of the bunker at No. 18, to get back to level par for the day and complete the 54-hole tournament at 3-under (69-72-72—213). The performance marks the fifth top-10 finish of Wegener's young collegiate career.
Following Wegener was redshirt-freshman Charlie Miller. The Jackson, Mississippi, native posted a final round 73 to finish the tournament in a tie for 19th (70-74-73—217). Miller dominated the par 5's at The Grove, going 7-under throughout the week to rank fourth in the field.
As they did yesterday, Josh Seiple and Jackson Suber fired identical rounds. The duo played the 7,368-yard course at 2-over this afternoon for rounds of 74. Seiple parred the first 10 holes before suffering a pair of bogeys on the back nine, while Suber recorded his lone birdie of the day on the par-4 12th. The freshman Suber edged the upperclassman Seiple thanks to a one-stroke difference in round one.
Competing as an individual, senior Beau Briggs finished in a tie for third overall with a career-low 209 (67-71-71). His third consecutive under-par round left him at 7-under for the tournament and only one shot behind co-medalists Alexandre Fuchs and Gabe Lench of Liberty, who led the Flames to the team title. Adding six more birdies during his final round, Briggs led the field with 19 birdies through 54 holes of play. His third-place showing topped his previous best finish, a tie for fifth at The Grove last year.
"We are certainly glad to get this three-week stretch of tournaments behind us," said head coach Chris Malloy. "I think that we were probably feeling the effects of that golf and travel a bit this week. However, I was very proud of the guys for gutting it out without their best stuff. We will get back, regroup and be ready for our final event of the fall season."
The Rebels have three weeks off before returning to the course. Ole Miss will leave the mainland to close out the fall campaign, traveling to Hawaii for the Warrior Princeville Invitational (Oct. 28-30).
