Rebels to compete against three top-50 teams
KAUAI, Hawaii - The Ole Miss men's golf team travels to the island of Hawaii for the seventh annual Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational (Oct. 28-30) on the island of Kauai's North Shore. The event will take place at the Makai Golf Club, which will be playing 7,223 yards as a par 72.
The 20-team tournament field consists of the host school University of Hawaii, Army, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Denver, East Tennessee State, Idaho, Louisiana, Louisville (15), Loyola Marymount, McNeese State, Missouri, Pepperdine (6), Purdue (44), Sam Houston State, San Diego, UAB, UMKC, Utah Valley and Ole Miss (37).
Head coach Chris Malloy will be bringing six Rebels to compete at the event, including Braden Thornberry, Cecil Wegener, Charlie Miller, Josh Seiple and Beau Briggs. Jackson Suber will be competing as an individual.
"We're extremely excited to get back to Hawaii," said Malloy. "The guys have great vibes on this course and certainly have shown that they enjoy playing in this event. I know that we all want to end the fall season on a high note and come home with the tournament title."
Thornberry, the No. 2 amateur in the world, leads the Rebels with three top-10 finishes in the first four tournaments of the season. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native has competed at Makai Golf Club the last three years, his best finish taking home the individual title in 2016. Behind Thornberry's 13-under 203 (71-65-67) to earn medalist honors, the Rebels captured the 2016 Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational by 22 strokes (277-276-278-831).
Cecil Wegener leads the Rebels in stroke average (72.45) going into the final tournament of the fall, coming off an eighth-place showing at the Intercollegiate at The Grove. The sophomore has posted round of par-of-better seven different times this season.
Charlie Miller joins Thornberry as the only Rebels to earn spots in the lineup for every tournament this fall. The freshman holds a stroke average of 73.90.
Last time on the island, the Rebels finished in seventh place with Thornberry and Briggs finishing in the top-35 individually.
The three-day event will begin Sunday morning at 1:00 p.m. CT with a shotgun start. Live scoring will be through Golfstat.com.
