Rebels Roll to 5-0 in SEC with Sunday Sweep

10/13/2019 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. -- An electric crowd and impressive hitting from the Rebel middle blocking duo led league-leaders Ole Miss (13-3, 5-0) to its first sweep of the conference season Sunday, taking down Auburn (6-10, 0-5) in Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

The Rebels remain the only undefeated team in the SEC, and improve their win streak to 13 games, the fourth-longest in the NCAA. Sunday's win also snapped a six-match skid against Auburn, dating back to 2015.

The squad was led by senior Nayo Warnell, who posted a team-high 11 kills on a .524 hitting percentage. Sunday was her 10thmatch hitting with an above .500 efficiency, a statistic she leads the league in and ranks in the Top 15 in the country in.

Veteran libero Nicole Purcell was also impressive, tallying 23 digs across three sets, tying for the third-most ever by a Rebel in a three-set match.

Fellow middle Aubrey Sultemeier also delivered sharp swinging, posting a .462 clip after adding six kills. The outside hitting duo of senior Emily Stroup and freshman Anna Bair delivered nine  kills each, while junior setter Lauren Bars dished out 31 assists and added 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the year.

The Rebels opened the gates firing, going up 13-7 after the hot swinging arm of Sultemeier, who turned in a trio of kills as Ole Miss began to build some cushion. Auburn began to trim the lead, taking seven of the next nine points to narrow the gap to 15-13.

After a kill from the Tigers kept the deficit to just two points at 17-15, the Rebels went on a tear, securing five straight points, including a pair of service aces from Warnell to go up 22-15. The Tigers continued to threaten, using a trio of two-point sequences to close in at 24-21, and following a brief Rebel huddle, senior Leah Mulkey delivered a slam, putting Ole Miss up 1-0 after 25-21.

It was the second consecutive time that Mulkey has ended a set for the Rebels, dating back to Wednesday's win at No. 22 Missouri.

The Tigers took the early lead in Set 2, despite a rally lasting 43 seconds that ended with a Warnell slam and in the Rebs' favor. Auburn stayed three-to-four points ahead, using a 4-0 rally to go up 12-7.

Ole Miss began to cut away, taking seven of the next nine points, including four straight, to even things at 14. The momentum shifted on a boost from Warnell, who registered two kills over the next eight points.

The squads traded points, succumbing to seven ties from that 14-14 mark. Kills from the veteran duo of Mulkey and Warnell gave the Rebels cushion at 22-20, and then back-to-back Tiger miscues followed by a kill from Bair gave Ole Miss a 2-0 match lead after another 25-21 decision.

The Rebels cruised through the third frame, taking six straight points on five Auburn errors and a Warnell kill to go up 11-4. A few points later, another run put Ole Miss up by their biggest lead of the match at 16-6.

The Tigers attempted to threaten once more, going on a 5-1 run to narrow things to 22-17. Back-to-back kills from Warnell and sophomore Lauren Thompson brought the Rebels to match point, only fitting that a slam from Warnell sealed the set and handed Ole Miss their first sweep of the conference season.

The Rebels will remain at home, hosting Arkansas in a nationally-televised matchup Friday, Oct. 18, and then welcome Texas A&M for a Sunday matinee. Friday's match is Disney Night, with fans encouraged to dress up, and Sunday is 90's Day, with a scrunchie giveaway.
