Rebels Tie Program Record with 14th-Straight Win Friday

10/18/2019 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. -- The streak continues for Ole Miss Volleyball, as the Rebels picked up their 14th-straight victory, tying for the longest win streak in school history, Friday in a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15) over Arkansas at Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Ole Miss remains unbeaten in the conference, improving to 6-0 in league action, and 14-3 on the season. The Rebels also snapped a four-match pattern of five sets with the Razorbacks, dating back to 2016.

The Rebels were led by a pair of double-digit attackers, as freshman Anna Bair tallied 14 and senior Emily Stroup posted 13, accompanying 12 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Senior libero Nicole Purcell tallied 21 digs, bringing her career total to 997 and needing just three digs to reach the 1,000 mark.

The middle blocking tandem of senior Nayo Warnell and Aubrey Sultemeier provided critical plays down the stretch, finishing with seven and eight kills each, respectively, while Warnell added two aces and Sultemeier tallied five blocks.

For just the third time in SEC action, the Rebs dropped the opening stanza, falling 19-25. It was a frame of runs, as both teams used rallies early to stay on each other's heels. The Razorbacks pulled away midway through, using three straight points to go up 15-12 and then another three in-a-row to increase the advantage to 18-14.

An Arkansas attack error and Bair kill closed the gap to two, but the Razorbacks continued to lead, eventually taking the set after picking four of the final five points.

The momentum changed in Set 2 in favor of the Rebels, as the squad built an early three-point cushion and added insurance on five consecutive points, including a pair of Bair kills, to go up 15-8.

Ole Miss led by as many as eight points in the frame, as Bair added another two kills as the Rebels took four of the final six in the set to take it 25-16 and even the match at one set apiece.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams saw 10 total ties. Tied as late as 21-21, the outside duo of Bair and Stroup turned in back-to-back slams to put Ole Miss in control, and Bair added a solo rejection for set point before an Arkansas miscue gave Ole Miss a 2-1 match lead after a 25-22 third frame.

When a back-row kill from sophomore Lauren Thompson put Ole Miss up 12-6 in the fourth, Arkansas battled, taking five straight points to trim the deficit to just one point. Purcell served the Rebels to their own five-point rally, relying on veteran experience as senior Leah Mulkey turned in a pair of slams (one assisted by Stroup, no less), classmate Warnell added one, and Purcell delivered an ace. The Rebels went on a 7-2 run during that sequence, adding a pair of points on another Warnell kill and block by herself and Bair, to go up 20-13.

Arkansas responded with two points to narrow the lead to five, but a Warnell ace and two timely kills from Sultemeier finished the contest for the Rebels, who improved to 7-2 in matches after dropping their opening frame.
