Ole Miss remains atop the league standings
OXFORD, Miss. -- In front of its biggest crowd of the season, (RV) Ole Miss Volleyball (14-4, 6-1 SEC) dropped a heartbreaker Sunday, falling in five sets (25-20, 18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 12-15) to Texas A&M (13-5, 5-3 SEC) at Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

The Rebels fought valiantly, trying to keep their 14-match win streak intact. It was the fourth longest in the nation, and tied for the longest in program history. Ole Miss still remains atop the league standings, tied for first in a four-way tie with fellow votes-receiver Georgia, No. 13 Florida, and No. 16 Kentucky.

A trio of double-digit kills led the Rebel offense, as senior Emily Stroup tallied her second-straight double-double, posting 14 kills and 13 digs. Fellow veteran Nayo Warnell added 10 kills while adding eight blocks, including three solo rejections. Warnell turned in a .529 clip, remaining at the top of the league in hitting efficiency. Freshman Anna Bair posted 10 slams, while adding four blocks of her own. Middle blocker Aubrey Sultemeier was also productive, tallying nine kills and seven blocks. The Rebels finished with 15 total blocks on the day, second-best of the season.

Senior libero Nicole Purcell, the league's leader in both digs and digs per set, reached a career milestone over the weekend, tallying the 1,000thdig of her career. She finished Sunday with 16.

The Rebels came out firing in the opening stanza, using a five-point rally to take the lead and build momentum early at 10-7, and then registered seven consecutive points, including two Sultemeier kills, in the later stages of the set to tie things at 18 and then cruise to set point.

A kill from setter Lauren Bars sealed the set for the Rebs 25-20. Sultemeier had five kills and four blocks in the first set alone.

In the second frame, A&M was also a fan of runs, picking up four straight points early to take a 5-3 lead. Next came three straight kills as part of another four-point rally to widen the gap to 12-7, and then an 8-0 run with four kills from senior outside Hollann Hans to lead 21-9.

The Rebels began to work a comeback, picking up four points with a pair of blocks from Warnell and Bair and Warnell and Bars, sandwiched between two Warnell kills, to trim the deficit to 22-14. The Rebels picked up four the final six points of the set, but it wasn't enough and the match was evened at a 25-18 mark. Hans went on to finish the contest with a career-high 32 kills.

The third set was a close battle, as the two squads stayed within three points of each other throughout the set as late as 23-21. A kill from Hans and a block pushed the Aggies to a 2-1 match lead at 25-21.

A kill from Stroup opened things up for Ole Miss in round four, a set they stayed in front of the entire frame. A 4-0 run early, courtesy of another set of blocks from Warnell and Bair, a kill from senior Leah Mulkey, and an A&M miscue, handed the Rebels some cushion at 9-4, but it was short lived after three straight Aggie points narrowed things to 9-7.

A&M came as close as 12-11, but another Rebel surge put Ole Miss back in comfortable position with five straight points, including back-to-back solo denials at the net from Warnell, to go up 20-13. The Rebels evened the contest at 25-18, finishing the set the way it was started; a kill from Stroup.

A kill from Sultemeier and back-to-back Aggie errors gave the Rebels three consecutive points in the fifth set, tying things up at 6-6. Things continued as cat-and-mouse, tied as late as 12-12 after a kill from Stroup before A&M picked up the final three points to complete the upset.

Stroup entered the third set with just four kills, igniting in the final three frames. Bars finished the match with 40 assists, her ninth match of the year with 40 helpers or more.
