Rebels Fall Wednesday in Athens

Ole Miss returns to action Sunday vs. No. 16 Kentucky
ATHENS, Ga. – In a battle of first-place squads, Georgia (15-4, 7-1 SEC) outlasted Ole Miss Volleyball (14-5, 6-2 SEC), falling in four sets (20-25, 27-25, 22-25, 15-25) at Stegeman Coliseum on Wednesday.
The loss snaps a seven-match road win streak, the second longest in program history.
Senior Emily Stroup tallied 11 kills, while sophomore Aubrey Sultemeier hit at a team-high .467 clip, posting eight kills. Junior Lauren Bars also hit at a high percentage, turning in a .500 efficiency with seven kills. She registered her league-leading 10th double-double, tallying 27 assists and 12 digs.
Veteran libero Nicole Purcell tied a career-high posting 27 digs. That performance ranks third all-time in rally scoring for a four-set contest. It was her fifth match of the year with 25 digs or more.
"This loss is on me," head coach Steven McRoberts said of the defeat. "I did a poor job of coaching. Georgia did a great job to get the win and they deserve the win, but this is not the level we have been playing at all season and that's on me."
The seniors delivered early in the opening stanza, as a kill each from Stroup, middle Nayo Warnell, and outside Leah Mulkey combined with a Purcell ace, put the Rebels on a four-point run and with an early lead.
It was short lived, as Georgia used their own 4-0 run to regain the advantage, including three straight kills from three-time Freshman of the Week Kacie Evans. The Bulldogs took advantage of a three-point rally to build a lead by as many as five, but the Rebels began to chip away, using their own three-point push thanks to a Bars kill, Warnell ace, and Stroup slam to come within three at 20-17.
The Rebels continued to pressure, limiting the gap to two points at 22-20 after a solo rejection from Stroup, but Georgia poured on the final three points, including back-to-back aces, to take the match lead at 25-20.
After opening up the frame with the first two points, Ole Miss continued to carry the advantage, capitalizing on three straight points on two separate occasions to go up 10-7. That lead was silenced, as the Bulldogs registered eight consecutive points to not only tie the frame, but take the lead and build a cushion at 15-10.
After sprinkling in points to trim the deficit, the Rebels rolled through four straight points, including a block and kill by Warnell, to come within two at 17-19. After another Evans kill, a Bars kill, Stroup ace, and block from freshman Anna Bair, the contest was evened at 20.
A set of back-to-back kills from Georgia's Mallory Hernandez once again put the Bulldogs on top, but a surge from Bars, who delivered a kill and teamed with Sultemeier for a denial at the net to accompany two Georgia errors put Ole Miss at set point. It would be their first of three.
A Bulldog block and kill tied the game until a Sultemeier slam put the Rebs back at set point. In déjà vu mode, the Bulldogs tied it once more, and yet again, Sultemeier delivered the kill to put them at set point, finishing the set 27-25 after a Georgia miscue and evening the match at one set apiece.
The momentum stayed in the Rebels favor to start the third frame, who used a Mulkey block and Lauren Thompson service ace to build an early 5-2 lead, and continued to cruise, using a five-point run later to build an eight-point advantage at 18-10.
In a reversal of the second set, it was Georgia who rallied back, turning in seven straight to come within one at 18-17.
The Rebels continued to cling to the lead, putting up a 21-19 lead. The Bulldogs replied with a 4-0 run, tying the contest and taking the lead.
Georgia went on to steal the set, 25-22, and go ahead once again in the match, 2-1.
Things seemed to continue to go the way of the Bulldogs, who opened the fourth set with eight of the first 11 points, and remained in control for the duration of the game, never relinquishing the lead and taking the contest 25-15 and the match 3-1.
