Volleyball’s Emily Stroup Named Senior CLASS Candidate
10/2/2019 | Volleyball
The 10 finalists will be announced later this season
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Ole Miss Volleyball senior Emily Stroup has been named a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, one of 30 players in the country to reach the semifinal round, the organization announced Wednesday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Stroup is one of five representatives from the SEC, and boasts a lengthy resume during her career in Oxford. A two-time AVCA All-Region selection, Stroup was All-SEC last year after replacing herself for the single-season kills record (584), a statistic she ranked second in the country in a year ago. Stroup also broke the single-match kills record on three separate occasions in 2018, tallying 30, 31, and then 32 kills. A U.S. National Collegiate Team tryout invitee, Stroup entered 2019 needing just 292 kills to become the all-time leader at Ole Miss and finished 2018 as one of the AVCA's Top 13 players not on a Top 25 squad. She led the SEC in kills, points (639), and kills per set (4.70) in 2018.
She was the only player in the SEC to post at least 20 kills and 20 digs in 2018, which she did on back-to-back occasions. She finished second in the league in double-doubles in 2018, after leading for most of the season. She has tallied over 35 in her career, serving as a six-rotation player since her sophomore season.
Off the court, the Fargo, N.D., product is nearly at the top of her class academically, and has logged several community service appearances and volunteer hours.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 midway through the regular season and placed on the official ballot. Ballots will then be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's community. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
