Rebels Coming off Team Title at Golfweek Conference Challenge
CHICAGO – The No. 13 Ole Miss women's golf team heads to the Chicago area for the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah, Oct. 7-8.
The two-day event will be played at Medinah Country Club No. 2 Course, which will be playing 6,159 yards and par 72. Medinah has hosted the 2012 Ryder Cup, four U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships in its history.
The Rebels will compete against fourteen teams including the host, No. 22 Illinois, No. 2 Kent State, No. 37 Texas Tech, No. 39 Indiana, No. 44 San Jose State, No. 47 Wisconsin, No. 48 Louisville, Augusta, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Purdue, Tennessee.
Head coach Kory Henkes is bringing five Rebels to compete at the event. Andrea Lignell will play as the No. 1, followed by Pi-Lillebi Hermansson, Kennedy Swann, Julia Johnson and Conner Beth Ball.
"We had a great tournament in Colorado and I hope that confidence carries over into Medinah," Henkes said. "We had some great couple weeks of practice, and I know this team is eager to get back on the course and compete."
Ole Miss is coming off the fifth team title in the Henkes' era, winning the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 23-25) at 15-under while setting a new program record for lowest 54-hole score (849).
It will be the second event in a row there will be a Rebel making their debut as the No. 1. Lignell will occupy that spot for the first time in her young Ole Miss career. The freshman is coming off a career-best outing when she tied for 7th at the Golfweek Conference Challenge with two rounds in the 60s (69-67-74—210). Lignell has two top-20 finishes to start her Rebel career.
Hermansson is coming off her third top-10 of her career while setting a new career-best 54-hole score in Colorado. The senior shot a 5-under 211 with two rounds par-or-better (70-68-73).
Swann had a career-finish in Colorado, finishing in 11th after a 4-under 68 to cap off her Golfweek Conference Challenge. The senior has two top-20 finishes to start her senior year.
Johnson will play as the No. 4 for the second straight week. The junior has finished top-15 in both events this fall and has shot par-or-better five of her six rounds.
Ball rounds out the starting five for Ole Miss, making her 2019-20 debut.
The first round begins Monday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and continuous play for 36 holes. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
