Ole Miss Places Eighth as a Team, Suber Ties for 15th Individually

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – Behind a career-low 67(-3) by freshman Veeti Mahonen, the No. 24 Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up play at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon.

The Rebels finished in eighth place, shooting 20-over (286-287-287—860) as a team throughout the two days of competition at Old Overton Club. BYU and Colorado State tied atop the leaderboard and were declared co-champions. Sophomore Jackson Suber led the Rebels on the leaderboard tying for 15th (72-65-73—210) at even par. Colorado State's Parathakorn Suyasri earned medalist honors at 11-under (65-67-67—199)

"It certainly was not our best day today. We got off to a little bit of a slow start and were never able to get momentum," head coach Chris Malloy said. "I was proud of the way our guys hung in there. We had it going in the wrong direction there for a little while, and coming down the stretch, they held on and hit some good shots which was nice to see. We had two sophomores who fired a 65 yesterday, then you have a freshman come out and shoot a new career low to help us on the final day. That is always encouraging."

Suber paced the team in scoring for the third time in as many events this season. The sophomore finished top-15 after a final round 3-over 73. He collectively shot a even par for the tournament and led the team in birdies with 11.

Sarut Vongchaisit put together a top-25 finish. The sophomore opened up with a career-low 5-under 65 in the first round, and followed that up with rounds of 75 and 74 to tie for 24th. Vongchaisit led the team in pars with 25.

Mahonen had the low round of the day Tuesday for Ole Miss, firing a 3-under 67 after back-to-back 75s on Monday. Starting on the back nine, he produced seven pars and two birdies  before making the turn. A birdie on his last hole of the day moved him into red figures over the final nine. Mahonen moved up 16 spots on the day to tie for 31st.

Jack Gnam tied for 40th after going 75-74-73—222 (+12). The sophomore finished strong with four birdies over his final seven holes, including three through the last four. Brody Blackmon finished tied for 46th after rounds of 74-73-78—225 (+15).

The Rebels have a quick turnaround for the next outing when they head to Jonesborough, Tennessee, for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate (Oct. 11-13).

"We have a lot of positives to build on, we had a couple low rounds from underclassmen so we're doing some good. We just have to limit the unforced errors like three putts," Malloy said. "Hopefully we'll get better. It's a different golf course, birdies will be at a premium. Sometimes it's good to get kicked in the teeth and then get right back out there, and I know our guys will be eager to get back out there and compete."
