Rebels Pitching Staff Shines in Victory over Tigers
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss handily took care of their rival to the north, the Memphis Tigers, in Friday's final matchup for the Rebels against outside competition this fall.
Ole Miss torched the Tigers by a combined score of 8-0 through twelve innings of action and two six-inning segments of play. The Rebels were boosted by a flurry of big hits from some clutch first-year players, but were truly carried to victory by a dominating performance all around the pitching staff tonight.
The Rebels sent out six pitchers in the twelve-inning affair, and let a diverse mix of veterans and newcomers control the pace of the game. The pitching staff totaled 21 strikeouts on the night, including thirteen through the first six innings, and allowed just three hits all game.
Sophomore Doug Nikhazy set the tone early, and turned in a flawless outing that would prove to be the norm for Rebel pitchers in this matchup. The young Rebel superstar and 2019 Saturday starter couldn't have gotten off to a better start as he struck out the side in the first, and followed it up with two more in his second inning to finish off his day with five strikeouts in two innings.
The Rebels were able to jump ahead early after some explosive hitting from a trio of first-year players. The Memphis pitcher allowed Peyton Chatagnier and Hayden Leatherwood to reach on a pair of free passes, and freshman Hayden Dunhurst made him pay with an RBI double to right field, allowing Leatherwood to score from second.
Chatagnier would later come around to score on a passed ball, and though two more Rebels reached base in the inning, a promising inning that delivered a pair of runs could have opened it up for the home team, but Ole Miss stranded two on an Anthony Servideo fly out.
Freshman Derek Diamond was called upon to work innings three and four, and he didn't skip a beat from Nikhazy's dominant first two innings. Although his first at bat resulted in a leadoff single, his catcher, Dunhurst, made up for it and erased the baserunner with an excellent throw to second on an attempted steal. Diamond would go on to strikeout two in the third, and two more an inning later in the fourth.
Back at the plate in the third, a seemingly quick inning was prolonged by a pair of extra base hits with two outs in the frame. Tim Elko started it off with a double to left, before Leatherwood cashed in on the second double in as many plate appearances, this one a rocket over the head of the second baseman.
Leatherwood would finish the day 2-for-2, with a home run, double, and two runs and two RBI.
Taylor Broadway would cap off the first half of action with two flawless innings, going the minimum of just six batters faced and striking out four along the way. Broadway did not allow a single runner to reach, and added to the day's total with the 13thstrikeout of the night through the first six innings. Both he and Nikhazy also failed to give up a hit, helping limit the Tigers to just two hits through the first six innings.
While the pitchers took care of business on the mound, Dunhurst's and Leatherwood's big hits helped ensure a 3-0 victory in the first six inning segment.
As the teams returned to the field after a brief break in action with a clean scoreboard, it was sophomore Gunnar Hoglund carrying the rock on the mound for the Rebels' to start off the game's second six-inning segment. Hoglund continued the trend of dominant Ole Miss arms and worked two quick innings that included a pair of strikeouts.
Greer Holston was next up, taking care of innings three and four, and although he worked himself into a jam, at one point walking three consecutive batters to load the bases, he kept the scoreless ballgame intact with an inning-ending strikeout. Holston also had two strikeouts on the night, and kept the Tigers hitless through 4.0 innings in tonight's second six-inning segment.
A pair of first-year Rebels, however, really stole the show in the late half of action, as Leatherwood continued his torrid day at the plate and Ben Van Cleve hopped into the action as both etched their name in the book with solo home runs to put the Rebels ahead.
The damage wasn't all done, though, as Tyler Keenan helped quash all hopes of a potential Memphis comeback with the dagger in the fifth inning of play. After a pair of walks and a HBP loaded the bases for the Rebel slugger, and directly following an errant pitch that allowed one to score freely, Keenan unloaded on a ball into the right-center gap, scoring a pair and giving the Rebels a 5-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
Max Cioffi handled the final two innings with ease, and although he allowed the Tigers' only hit over the final six innings, he still managed to ring up four to bring the Rebel strikeout total to 21 on the day, and with Cioffi's quick two innings behind him, the Rebels walked away with a combined 8-0 win on the night.
Today's game against Memphis officially wraps up Ole Miss's slate of outside competition for the fall, with a split series against Arkansas State and a big victory over the Tigers from Memphis. The Rebels will scrimmage for two more weeks before the Pizza Bowl crowns the ultimate champion of the fall.
