Rebels Drop Sunday Showdown to South Carolina

11/10/2019 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. – Senior Emily Stroup tallied her fourth-straight double-double Sunday, recording 14 kills and 10 digs, but Ole Miss Volleyball (14-10, 6-7 SEC) was unable to pick up the victory, falling in three sets to South Carolina (16-8, 8-4 SEC) by scores of 21-25, 20-25, 18-25 at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.

Stroup ranks second in the league in double-doubles, trailing only Rebel setter Lauren Bars, who finished the day with 26 assists, snapping a four-match double-double streak of her own after falling one dig shy with nine.

Senior Nayo Warnell tied a career-high with three service aces. Warnell also posted six kills on the afternoon.

South Carolina opened the contest with momentum, going on an 8-2 run and holding a six-point lead as late as 11-5. The Rebels began to chip away, coming within three at 16-13 on a Warnell ace, her first of two in the set.

Ole Miss continued to battle, using a Bars tip over the net and subsequent Stroup slam to keep the Rebels alive at 24-21, but South Carolina used a Mikayla Robinson kill to take a 1-0 match advantage at 25-21.

Ole Miss picked up five of the first seven points of the second frame to establish energy early. The Rebels continued to control the set, tallying a trio of points on a South Carolina miscue and back-to-back kills from the veterans Stroup and Warnell, to go up 8-4.

The Gamecocks secured four consecutive points to trim the deficit to just one at 10-9. A pair of Anna Bair kills combined with two South Carolina errors gave the Rebels some cushion, pushing their lead up to 15-11.

The Gamecocks followed with a nine-point rally, tying the match and then building a five-point cushion before sophomore Lauren Thompson snapped the streak, with a slam she supplied down the back corner. Another Thompson kill followed by back-to-backs from Stroup narrowed the gap to just 22-20, but South Carolina replied with three straight to steal the set 25-20 and maintain the match lead.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair, as the two squads endured 13 ties and six lead changes. After the Gamecocks tied the contest at 13-13 and took control of the frame as part of a three-point rally, they maintained the lead for the duration.

The Rebels threatened, using a Stroup kill to come within one at 18-17 and capitalizing on a Gamecock miscue at 19-18, but South Carolina responded with six straight points to seal the victory at 25-18 and pick up their fifth consecutive three-set victory.
