Junior Sabina Macholova wins flight at Rebel Invitational in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS -- Junior Sabina Machalova led the way for Ole Miss Women's Tennis on the final day of fall competition Sunday, picking up an individual title at the 2019 Rebel Invitational, hosted by UNLV and held at the Frank and Vicki Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
Machalova finishes the fall campaign with eight wins after outlasting the 10th-ranked player in the country in Georgia Tech's Kenya Jones in a 6-3, 7-5 decision.
The contest was a rematch, as Machalova and Jones faced off in October in the All-American Championships, and Jones prevailed in a three-setter after picking up a crucial 6-7(4) tiebreaker in the second set. It was the first ranked win of the year for Machalova, who carries her own No. 56 boasting from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason Rankings.
The veteran duo of Alexa Bortles and Tereza Janatova were also victorious, picking up consolation wins. Janatova downed Kansas' Vasiliki Karvouni 6-2, 6-3, while Bortles defeated Arizona's Khim Iglupas by identical 6-3, 6-3 marks.
In doubles, Machalova and Bortles fell in consolation finals to Jones and her Yellow Jacket teammate Victoria Flores in a narrow 8-7 score. Machalova and Bortles carry a No. 17 ITA ranking in doubles.
The Rebel trio will begin spring play in January.
