Ole Miss defeated Memphis 4-1 and followed with a 4-0 finish against UT Martin

OXFORD, Miss. --  Ole Miss Women's Tennis finished the day 2-0 on the young season, after registering wins over Memphis and UT Martin Monday at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center, located along Manning Way.

It was the debut for freshmen Kelsey Mize and Victoire de Samucewicz, who each earned their first collegiate dual match victories and paired up for a win in doubles during the second contest.

MATCH ONE
Memphis picked up a 6-2 decision on Court 3 to take an advantage in the doubles point, but it was short lived after the veteran duo of junior Sabina Machalova and senior Alexa Bortles evened things with a 6-4 victory.

The doubles point came down to Court 2, where the nationally ranked duo of seniors Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova battled through to tie things at 3-3 and again at 4-4 to keep the hope for the doubles point alive. The pair took the final three games to pull off the comeback 7-5 and give the Rebels the 1-0 advantage.

Memphis broke onto the board with a sweep on Court 6 to even the score at 1-1, but it was short lived thanks to Vrbenska's quick work on Court 4, winning in identical 6-1, 6-1 decisions.

The Rebels regained the lead after Janatova finished shortly after, and the clinch was completed thanks to nine straight games from Machalova, blanking the Tigers' Alisha Reayer in her second set.

MATCH TWO
The veteran duo of Vrbenska and Janatova wasted no time in the Rebels' finale, blanking the Skyhawks on Court 2 in doubles. Ole Miss earned the doubles point after the freshman pairing of Mize and Samucewicz registered a 6-2 result on Court 3.

The Rebels continued to work at a steady pace, as Janatova, Mize, and de Samucewicz all finished within two minutes of each other, Mize the clincher for Ole Miss. Both freshmen went perfect in their second sets, finishing 6-0.

Redshirt freshman Grace Anne Jones competed in her first dual match for the Rebels, playing on Court 5 but did not finish.

AT THE NET WITH… HEAD COACH MARK BEYERS
Overall thoughts on the day…
"Very useful day today.. it was one of those things that looking ahead having to play Michigan and a Top 15 team, we needed to compete today… Memphis, those guys have a heck of a team- and that's a good win. We were pushed in that match for sure, and that's something that is going to make us better prepared for the ITA Kickoff next weekend."

On the performances of the freshmen….
"We talked about the day being useful- those guys were a little tight the first match a little nervous in the doubles and their singles matches. They got the butterflies out and their second matches were a lot better. This was important for them to compete and get pushed and figure out what college tennis is all about."

On his core of veterans and their performances…
"I thought our older kids [Sabi, Lex, Terk, Anna] did an amazing job. They played really good tennis. We've had really great practices, but you never know if that translates into good matches. But those guys have carried us for a few years, and earlier in the season they'll probably have to again as our freshmen figure things out."

On the crowd and atmosphere…
"For us to have that type of crowd at a 10 AM match on MLK Day… it was a great crowd. We appreciate them coming out because it really helps so much. It truly does bring a home court advantage having that support."
